You Know You're Bored When...

* You find the concept of staples inexplicably hilarious.
* You find yourself giving every pixel on your computer screen a name.
* You start feeling remarkably ambivalent towards gherkins.
* You start doing faultless impressions of Tinky Winky, handbag and all.
Bob Snitchet

Remarkably ambivalent towards gherkins- a phrase you don't hear every day.

Dear WLW

Been wondering for a while, but your comment on the Irish guy on RI:SE (the gorgeous Colin Murray if you were wondering) finally settled it for me... you are my best friend Amanda, come on, admit it.

You have the same comments and hatred of B*ckch*t. I'm a bit peeved you didn't tell me earlier.
Missy Pink

I'm your best friend Amanda? Blimey- wonder if me mum knows.

Tragedy

Somebody has stolen the Rainbow puppets- what kind of sick, evil person would do this? It's an outrage!

Even though I'm too young to remember Rainbow, I used to have a very nice pair of Zippy socks and I am deeply hurt by this.

Thank you to Outcast for thinking up some names, as I couldn't be bothered. Could I possibly ask some extremely important questions, so that I have a bettter picture of the sort of person you are.

1. Do you like jam?
2. Do you have a thing against rats?
3. Do you secretly have/ seek an MBE for services to broadcasting?
4. Can you draw me a picture of a nuclear plant cooling tower?
False Dioxide

That would be yes, no, no... oh, and definitely no!

Bacteria

Don't you feel sorry for those poor little guys? Not only are they getting killed in countless numbers every second, but they are so minute that nobody gets to see them in their full glory. It's as if nature has something against them.

What has bacteria done wrong, hey? They are just trying to live their normal lives. Support bacteria, it's the only culture some people have.

WLW And Fellow Ziners

I recentl discovered that you can put the word "ginger" into any rock band or song and get a completely new meaning. Observe:

Limp Bizkit... Ginger Bizkit
Fat Lip... fat Ginger
Master of Puppets... Master of Ginger
Left Behind... Ginger Behind

Scary, huh?

1. Manchester United (Sorry, WLW)

3. Galaxy Ripples
4. Badly Drawn Boy
5. Laughing at alcopop-drinking townies.
6. The word "undulating".
7. The Brian Conley Show.

Have we really overlooked the obvious for so long? WLW is a two headed creature and each head has a turn at writing the comments on the bottom of the page. One head is female, the other male, therefore WLW can continue eluding us as to its gender. Aha, I'm onto you now.

As an avid reader of Teletext- to the extent that all my friends take the mickey out of me for it- I've noticed a few eccentricities, such as The Void's inability to print an underscore.

I was just wendering, are you also unable to print them if I was unable to type somw, would you be forced to substitute them with stars like The Void? And yes, I do realise that this makes me even less likely to be printed than usual.

In what wy does Michael Jackson look great, as Jasmine Roberts bizarrely claims? He looks like what he is- a 50-year-old man who hasn't released anything of merit since Margaret Thatcher was in power.

Listening to him on radio from his press conference, I thought he sounded OK... but then to see the pictures. Freak alert! It's nice to see the M1 extension being built on his chin. Jelltex

I'm confused. First of all, Ringo Starr appears on Aviva's ad to say he might not have been successful if he'd stayed as Richard Starkey. Next thing you know, he's complaining when people call him by his stage name. Is he going through an identity crisis?

Also, I agree that Earls was harsh to only give Pure Reason Revolution 5/10. It nicely mixes prog and electro, the vocal arrangements are lovely. Album of the year, until Decemberists. DJ Gordy

So in 2019 we're all going to die after being struck by some rock or other. How long before Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Norton decide to nuke it?

Will aerosmith release another ballad to commemorate the event? Will teh 2019 Pop Idol ever make it number one that year? Tune in in 17 years to find out.

I'm looking forward to the Florence And The Machine album. Although I've only heard four songs, she seems to be doing something more varied than her peers. There's some joyful punk and a bit of Kate Bush style loopiness. I just hope her Brit hasn't placed unrealistic expectations on her career. Nicko

It's daft to claim U2 have sucked since 1987. I'm unsure about the new album, but I only saw them for the first time on the Vertigo tour and The Edge's guitar made me shiver. Gazzoir

I have to add my two cents on how good The Killers have been on their current tour. What a band, what a setlist, what a showman. Brandon Flowers is the best frontman since Freddie Mercury. The new songs are terrific live, even though the album is a slow-burner. R Wiggum

I agree with the Voider who said Machine Head have been poor supporting Metallica on tour. They were sub-standard in Sheffield, looking lost on the in the round stage, with a poor sound that didn't affect the other support act, The Sword.

Metallica were simply awesome. It's the 16th time I've seen them, not all of which have been great, with a jaw-dropping stageshow. Even the coffin was the right side of cheesy. Miki Ogawara

Gazzoir says that The Edge's guitar made him shiver when he saw U2 in concert? Don't make me laugh. Try listening to Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols, John McGeoch of Magazine or PIL's Keith Levene. The Edge tries to copy Levene, but he just can't get it right. K Phillips

A Work of Genius For You

There was an old fella from Slough
Who wanted to dress like a cow
He asked his friend, Pat
Who said "Don't do that"
And replied "I've already done it now".

OK, so it's not quite a work of genius, but hey- I have a headache. Obviously.
samurai hedgehog

Oh, obviously! I fail to see any other valid reason for that.

As a lover of both Bob Dylan and The Beatles, I'm torn by the view that The Beatles may not have progressed lyrically without Dylan's influence. Dylan gave music a lyrical genius and wanted to be a rock star. The Beatles had melodic genius and tried folk. Both had a social, cultural and political influence which wouldn't be allowed today. Andy McGarvey

I hate the myth that Jacko has faded. HIStory is his best album. Marty Flan

My Claim To Fame

Five years ago, when I was 11, I went on a caravan holiday in Wales with my dad, brother, my dad's girlfriend and her two demon daughters.

It was soooooembarrassing- we had to truck around Wales in this caravan pulled by a horse, followed by weirdo cameraman. All this for a two minute on Gaby Roslin's Real Holiday programme. I'm scarred for life.

Meeting Gaby Roslin would be enough to scar me for life.

Michael Jackson displayed more charisma and presence in a four-minute press conference than most acts do in an entire gig. Fi Rose

Fall Out Boy in Manchester was the best gig I've ever seen. Patrick Stump is an amazing frontman who needs more recognition (especially as I seem to be the only female FOB fan who doesn't drool over Pete Wentz). It lived up to all my expectations, and I can't wait to see them again. Laura Walker

It's pretty rich of Peter Doherty (now with new, improved 'r') to get chippy about Razorlight, when one of the songs on his solo album is a dead ringer for Golden Touch. Glasgow Ella

Michael Jackson may have had plastic surgery, but what does that have to do with his music? If the worst Jelltex can throw at him is that he looks freaky, I guess he's doing OK after doing 40 years in the business. We're lucky to have him back. Fiona Bennett

Do I Get A Refund?

Today I missed a whole day of my summer holidays because I was ill! I ask you, is that fair? Is it right? Will I get a refund of my day at Christmas?

I was forced to spend the whole day at home watching TV... oh wait, I would have done that anyway!

I've just got the compilation Undead: A Gothic Masterpiece, and it has some dross but a few crackers. Can anyone give me info on Play Dead, who feature on it, as they're a cross between PIL and Killing Joke. Sam Itla

According to Earls, Shontelle is lyrically a cut above her R&B peers. T-shirt has the belter "I thought I'd do some shopping/ But I couldn't get past the door." Shontelligence sounds so promising. Rancel BC

Quincy Or Sloane?

As I was reading Zine in Monday, I was amazed to see that there is someone who watches Quincy and Diagnosis Murder, and is plagued by the same dilemma I have- Quincy or Dr Mark Sloane?

I've thought about it a lot, but decide who is the best. If anyone can help in the battle of Quincy vs Sloane, then please do.
The Sheep In The Polka Dot Socks

I think we decided already- Quincy kicks butt.

WLW

I recently came across a highly disturbing list entry. Sugared Venom in a "You know you're bored when..." list, casually placed Little House On The Prairie at the top of that list.

As if that wasn't bad enough, such a high-quality programme was given the same entertainment value as "picking raisins out of Fruit And Nut bars". How could you print such a controversial letter on these prestigious pages?
A New Kind of Intelligence

Er... high quality programming? This is a joke, right?
