Hey WLW

I have become heartily sick of staring at the walls of my room and so I decided to provide some facts you probably didn't want to know about me!

I predicted Tim Henman would not win Wimbledon.
My aunt knows Trisha off the TV.
I share my birthday with Prince Philip, Liz Hurley and David Platt.
I like the new song by The Streets.
My mom once served Vera Duckworth in Tesco.
samurai hedgehog

You predicted Tim Henman wouldn't win Wimbledon? Wow- you're a veritable genius.

Ziners

As this is my first letter to Zine, I would like to add my own psychotic ramblings to the ever fantastic Poetry Corner.

She stood on the bridge at midnight,
Her lips were all a-quiver.
She gave a cough,
Her leg fell off,
And floated down the river.

More power to the goats!
Psychotic Goat Overlord

One of the most disturbing efforts yet. But welcome all the same.

Forsooth Dr Nick

I am greatly perturbed that DrNick's erudite, concise and educated tome, Living With A Willy, has not made the Sunday Times' Bestseller list.

This is scandalous. A book as highly regarded and enthusiastically read as this should have a place in every bookshop throughout the land and should be required reading for the nation.

Alert your MPs forthwith.
The Brigadier

I'm waiting for that movie- I believe Disney has the option.

Hey Hey!

Can anyone explain to me why all the slugs and snails come out when it rains?

Do they not know that they will only get trodden on? And why they make such a noise when you step on them?

Slugs and snails, for yours and our sakes, don't do it. Thank you.

I recently delved into the randomly spelt and abbreviated world of the internet, and discovered some quite interesting things.

Not only am I not the only person in the world who likes Michelle Branch, I'm not the only person who hates the third Jurassic Park film. I'm yet to find a website dedicated to blue paint however, which is what I was really looking for.
Mr Robofish

Family Announcements

This morning, I found that our goldfish. Bob Flapper, had died. Usually, this sort of thing wouldn't get to me but I was very close to that fish. We went everywhere together.

But now, since little fishy Bob has gone to that big fishbowl in the sky, I don't have a clue what to do with my life. So, I'm going to put a brave face on and try to get over this trauma. Thank you for your time.

It's brilliant that U2's new single has only reached No 12. Maybe people are finally seeing the light. They had some decent '90s stuff, but the recent songs are garbage.

Also, what is Earls thinking to only give 5/10 to Filthy Dukes' new single? I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he had an off-day when reviewing it. Give it another go. As for The View, Kyle's voice helps them stand out. Ron Nonymous

What's wrong with The Thrills for Cold Lazarou to have a pop at them? Morrissey liked them so much he had them support him at London's Royal Albert Hall, while REM and Oasis also invited them out on tour. That shows what Lazarou knows. Cast

I agree that Radiohead care too little for what others think, and have sacrificed some mainstream support as a result. It's something to admire them for, whatever you think of them. The Beatles, while experimental, kept their music accessible. John Ox

I can't recommend Smashing Pumpkins' live DVD Fillimore enough. Dear Ziners

I was on holiday in Southport last week and one of the townies I spotted was wearing an orange tracksuit. And not just bits of orange or orange stripes- this was all over 100% orange.

Now, the question is what makes a person look at all the colours on the shelf and pick orange? Perhaps colour blindness? Orange should only ever be worn by railway workers.

As I often have to use the Tube on my travels, I have decided to compile a set of my observations when travelling on it.

Reasons Why It's Great To Be Short

1 People think you're younger and you pay less on buses.
2 You can hide under people at gigs when things get dangerous.
3 You can wear little kids' clothes, like Fireman Sam T-shirts.
4 People think you're sweet and innocent.

Can't think of any more, but that's quite a strong list, right, WLW?

Things we didn't know a week ago

In a week when we learned that the British film industry is in good health, there were some other tidbits that emerged from news stories.

* French President Nicholas Sarkozy has collected stamps since he was a boy.

* Doodling aids the memory.

* Peanut allergies have trebled in the past decade in the UK.

* There are two types of intelligence- "fluid" is analysis and "crystallize" is the knowledge of facts.

* The biggest undergound machine in the world mines salt in Cheshire.

* About 1, 000 people in the UK lose their voice box annually.

* Hitler spared Blackpool because he wanted it as his personal playground.

* Fleeces were worn by clubbers in the acid house scene of the 1908s.

I have an answer for the Iron Maiden fans asking how big they'd be if the media hadn't ignored them exactly as big as they are now.

Their last album was in 2006, and I remember seeing a few interviews with them then. Bruce D*ckinson has his own Radio 2 show. You can't move for stories about him flying his plane. Good luck to Maiden in managing their press coverage so well, but let's not forget they're "ignored". H Watts

After their Godlike Genius win at NME Awards, I'm fed up of hearing The Cure being called "morose". If you listen to them properly, that's not generally the case. More power to Robert Smith. If you want real misery, try Natalie Merchant. Ophelia Curist

While Earls has his faults- I'll never forgive him for foisting those out-of-tune clowns Hope of The States into my ears- for Matt Howlett to accuse him of "always being negative" is silly.

If anything, I'd say Earls can be too praiseworthy sometimes, as I've checked out a few stinkers he's given rave reviews. But I've got into bands like The National and The Shins from his praise, so don't diss him for failing to fawn over U2. Dave Parker

I disagree with some of the artists who are being put forward as "influential" on The Void recently. elvis presley was an incredibly successful pop star, with the looks, voice and moves. He was a hero- but his songs weren't that influential. Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Chuck Berry influenced The Beatles more.

Clapton and Hendrix are amazing guitarists. But, again, how influential are their songs? Andy McGarvey

I'm excited about the return of Lighntning, after PS News' story on their new album in May. But, if it's written and produced by Ian Broudie, I wonder how different it will be to his tame solo album, Tales Told.

I hope at least a couple of Broudie's old bandmates are backing him again. I'm optimistic, but equally trying to prepare myself for a letdown. At a guess, it'll be like the early band-free Seeds album. Kanye's Vest

To say that The Beatles only made music for mass appeal shows ignorance for the time in which they began. The social prejudices of the '60s were challenged by the innovation of bands like The Beatles and rolling stones. They were radicals of the time, overhauling huge social barriers to pave the way for bands of the future. Attilathehood

For a good British rock band, I'd recommend Losing Sun, who stand above reflecting passing trends. Yonis Jama

Ophelia left me confused, which is good. How one does one listen to The Cure "properly"? I've always gone for "upside-down in a vat of custard" myself. It half-works. Neiltay

I've been an Iron Maiden fan since 1981. If they'd half the coverage from the beginning as they've enjoyed it since their last album, in 2006, it wouldn't be a problem. Steve Harris hates the UK press for its ignorance of metal and its fans. Caernarfon Jez

The poor state of modern hip-hop has made me investigate other genres, and I see that drum and bass is on top at the moment. Calibre, Lynx and Chase And Status have a real passion for their art form, and aren's shallow and avaricious like so many of the current crop of rappers.

Chase And Status's new single, Against All Odds with Kano, is hip-hop, but it's more authentic than the new crop of grime records. Rich A

U2 may sell a few records, but they have the world's biggest egotist in their ranks. For a really big rock band, I saw Metallica this week. Col Y

WLW

As you have finally revealed the e-mail address to me, no longer do I have to scrounge a whole 19p to buy a stamp, but I still have to think for a long period of time of anything remotely interesting to say.

As you can tell, I'm still working on the thinking part but, before I go, I just wanna say something. One day, one day, I will be WLW.
Mim, Nice But Dim

You really wanna put yourself through all the exams necessary to be me?

Ode To Kate

After the delightful and alluring Kate wins Big Brother this year, I would like to whisk her off to my private retreat in Florence.

Once there we can stroll in my vineyard and take a tipple or two of sherry. I shall feed her fresh bananas and sing sea shanties.

She will find my jocular jingles enervatingly entertaining.
The Brigadier

You keep your jocular jingles covered, thank you very much.

Jezza I have Green Day, Incubus and Muse posters on my wall. What does that make me in your eyes?

A lad with great taste in posters.

A Leprechaun Called Steve Why won't you leave me alone! I'm my own person and you're a worthless nobody! Oh, hi, WLW. I was just talking about you.

Hmmmm. Thought my ears were burning.

Vital Stats

Out of all the times I have been printed on Zine, 18% of all my letters have been on Mondays, 16% on Tuesdays, 22% on Wednesdays, 15% on Thursdays, 16% on Fridays and 13% on Sundays.

6% of my letters have been printed on page 1, 13% on page 2, 15% on page 3, 14% on page 4, 13% on page 5, 15% on page 6, 14% on page 7 and 10% on page 8. All of the above is a complete lie.

Ernie's Bathtime Buddy

Is this referring to Bert or rubber duckie? Both of which are really good. Anyone else like these loveable scamps?

WLW, can we please have a pic of rubber duckie? And why is it that everyone (except me, girls) seems to have a Zine partner now? Have we become a dating agency?
Tinned Pineapple

No, we are not a dating agency! However, we do love rubber duckies.

10 Great Things To Do As Frontman In A Band

1. Sing
2. Scream
3. Swear
4. Stage dive
5. Hit the bassist with your microphone
6. Sign autographs until your fingers bleed
7. Shout anti-pop phrases in front of thousands of fans
8. Um... sing?

I really should plan these things.
Rustiredd The Squirrel Warrior

I don't care how much Muse go on about their classical new album. If they think I'm going to listen to Simon Bates preview it on Classic FM, they're sadly mistaken. DJ Gordy

I'm glad someone responded in to The Thrills' defence after the criticism here. Their last album Teenager was brimful of great melodies, catchy tunes and Conor Deasy's about-to-crack sweet voice. Then again, I like U2's new album so what do I know? Paul Howorth
