Ah, WLW

You make me feel so grand,
Animales and I would love to lend you a hand,
But we're just too busy with our band,
We'll never find another like you anywhere in this land.

Animales's Good Friend

That was rubbish, Animales. I hope the songs written by your band are better.

Thanks for the chocolate, Squashed Strawberry/ Hector's House.

I was amused by Lem's comment that every version since Jeff Buckley's has been an interpretation of Hallelujah. What about John Cale's wonderful version (as heard on Shrek's soundtrack)?

Recorded before Buckley's, it's a fair guess Buckley used it as the template for his cover, and it beats Buckley's any day. The melancholy in his voice gets me. It's the version the X Factor should try to emulate. Andrew Marsden

Derek Griffiths

Do any Ziners have any pictures of Derek Griffiths? (He used to be in Play School.)

If you have, i'll swap you for pictures of:

Frances De La Tour (Rising Damp),
Donovan (1960s hippie singer),
Brian Blessed (larger than life thespian who was in Blackbadder).

Good to see The stranglers get a mention here. I liked their early pub rock and bawdy lyrics. I saw them at Bath Pavilion where, unhappy with the sound, they encouraged the crowd to demand a full refund or trash the club. The place was trashed, and the council revoked the venue's music licence for several years. The Reverend

The recent letter about some songs being good enough to transcend any cover version made me recall how some friends and I agreed that Paul Young's Wherever I Lay My Hat was better than Marvin Gaye's, as it benefits from the slower tempo. In contrast, Young should have left Don't Dream It's Over alone.

REM are my favourite. I don't have a problem with covers of their songs, but Paul Anka murdered Everybody Hurts. That song is too sacrosanct. Gazzoir

Dr Nick

I miss Dr Nick. He really did give the best advice ever, and reading letters from girl with odd boyfriend/ girl with no boyfriend/ boy with unhealthy toast obsession etc... really brightened every new day. It's a sad fact but life just isn't the same now and very few people understand. Dr Nick would understand. If only he were here.

Re cannibal holocaust. Animals killed in the deodato and lenzi cannibal films were often tortured before dying slowly. That's what makes it wrong. Jreggae, Stevenage

Two reasons why my Irish teacher has lost the plot and is dancing with the pixies:

It's a fallacy to suggest only skinny pop stars get abuse and that no one picks on "our portly stars". Gary Barlow is the most obvious singer mocked for his weight, while Ricky Wilson and Tom Chaplin also come in for stick. 3: 10 To Yuma

My favourite films of 2008 was one which appeared early on in the year, the excellent western 3: 10 To Yuma. When I head they had remade the 1957 classic, I was sceptical, but I needn't have worried. End cannibal row

I saw it about 12 years ago and thought it was badly acted, badly written, badly produced and badly directed. I thought it made Spice World look like Oscar contention stuff. Garbage, draw a line over it and forget about it.

Most horror remakes are bad but I must admit I enjoyed the remakes of Hallowe'en and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and thought they were more than equal to the originals. MWR, Thornaby On Tees

Barry Scott

So, I see that Barry Scott is back on the telly, advertising pink/ purple-coloured cleaning products.

Perhaps somebody should tell him that if he stopped eroding pennies he might have saved enough to quit and moved up the ladder to advertising loans.

Ten Flaws Down

Who in their right mind would want to advertise loans, Ten Flaws Down?

Day/ Dead remake review

I just saw the Day of The Dead "remake" and was pretty disappointed. Apart from a few references to characters of the original, this film is completely different and feels more like a cash-in on the name.

It's actually not a terrible film (apart from the truly terrible setting) and has a few cool moments but overall it's average at best and instantly forgettable at worst. Damien, Birmingham

Is Kirkland Ciccone having a laugh? He condemns women who re vile about other women, yet Girls Aloud are among the worst offenders, lashing out at Lily Allen, Charlotte Church and The Spice Girls, among others.

As for Kirkland calling Girls Aloud "the female Beatles", as he did a few months ago, The Spice Girls' debut album and singles had higher worldwide sales than all of Girls Aloud's albums put together. Peter Pinsent

Dalek Ah, bless you, Dave Da Rave. Don't listen to Paul Simon.

He's not the same since Garfunkel left him- the moody wotsit.

Pet Zombie There's a song called January by Goldfinger (WHO RULE!) so, The One With Mighty Antlers, January does ROCK!

As does February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September...

Dougie The Minesweeper Shish kebabs rock!

Veggie kebabs rock too, man.

Best live albums? Despite their often debatable production, you can't go wrong with The Ramones' It's Alive, Cheap Trick's At The Budokan and maybe The Clash's Here To Eternity. G Diddy

It's not attractive women that we women have a problem with. Santogold, Martina Topley-Bird and Lykke Li are all beautiful and I admire them. But the key there is they don't need to exploit their looks. It's all done on their own terms. Glasgow Ella

GreenDay

I'll volunteer my combusting services to set fire to GreenDay, that way they may stop their awful attemps at music.

Or, maybe, I could just peck them a few times, yes, that would be fun.

Alex James reckons Blur are reforming "just when I least expected it"? Funny, he's always sounded pretty prepared for it before. I could have sworh that, periodically over the past two years, James himself have raised the notion of the band getting back together.

I imagine he nagged Coxon and Albarn "Are we going to play together soon?" like a child asking his parents "Are we there yet?" on the way to a theme park. Daj
