Female DJs

Female DJs are better than male ones?

Two words: john peel.

Actually, he was in a class of his own, anyway. All DJs now are witless prattlers who only get in the way of decent music with their mindless stupefying chatter.

Congrats on getting that job, Emma.

Look Around You

Do any other Ziners watch Look Around You? I'm telling you, this is a great programme- a spoof of one of those science shows from the '70s and '80s telling us what life will be like in the year 2000? It is guaranteed to make you laugh.

Is there anyone who will join me in forming a Look Around You appreciation or club? Or are clubs ' so ' 2003?

Well, I don't know about an overall superhero, but if we had separate ones, I'd be Luco El Loco: Chocolate Fairy.

Every Valentine's Day I would fly around the UK delivering chocolates to deserving singletons. Further to indulge my recipients, I could have a small fleet of RAC-style knights and biker chicks on motorcyclles carrying out some of the deliveries. Can't beat a biker on a lonely night.

I play a CD from the 1990s at a certain volume. I take the CD out, put in a CD from the last few years and my stereo almost explodes from the loudness. Why do labels insist on mastering their CDs at such ridiculously loud levels?

Hip hop albums are always louder! Do they think fans can only enjoy music at a level that leaves permanent damage? It's only a matter of time before you put the volume at 1 and the music tears through the fabric of space. Disco Stu

Strokeability

I think I've made a friend! I was wandering around town in my rather nice leopard print coat, when this random person just ran up to me, started stroking the coat, and then ran away.

I can't really blame them though, it's a very strokeable coat. Do you have the problem of people coming up to you and stroking your lovely giraffe fur while you're out and about, WLW?

I download music illegally as a way to test it. If I then like it, I buy it. If I don't, or I can't afford it, I delete it. There are so many albums out there I want to buy, I must prioritise.

I've been introduced to hundreds of bands I otherwise wouldn't have heard because of downloading. And if that means tiny bands get a record deal as a result, it can't be bad. Unfortunately, too many people who do this just see it as " free " music. Vaughan80

Cars

Deciding on a car to drive is hard. I mean, according to one advert, driving their car may result in being attacked by giant hockey players, while another may result in being chased by cloud monsters. Some cars even run the rsk of turning into dancing robots, crushing the people in the car in the process.

I think the safest option might be to just carry on walking everywhere.

My favourite shape has to be a hexagon. You can do so many things with it, fit many shapes inside of it and it doesn't cause as much hassle as the circle or the triangle. Pythagoras has a lot to answer for with his triangle theorems.

Actually, I'm just very bored. As you can probably tell. It still doesn't answer why I'm recapping all I know from the very subject I deliberately quit years ago.

The Spice Girls owe it all to Simon Fuller, do they? They had four of their nine No 1s after sacking him. Fuller's next venture, 21st Century Girls, proved he hasn't got a Midas touch at all times.

Previously, he managed Eurythmics, with just one Number 1. He went on to manage Victoria Beckham's solo career, and she was the only Spice Girl not to have a solo chart-topper. Geri Halliwell managed four. Peter Pinsent

I'm aware most bands aren't obscenely rich, but 99% of illegal downloads are by kids who only get £5 pocket money. Can you begrudge them downloading Girls Aloud or Madonna, rather than spending that money on a pointless single?

While I think Helen Watts is right that bands are too quickly dismissed these days on the path to " greatness ", another problem is bands are too pampered by the industry.

The Smiths fitted their entire career in five years, the same amount of time as Radiohead have sat around trying to follow up the so-so Hail To The Thief. I bet if they were given a deadline of two months, it'd be better than what will finally ooze. Pete Mitchell

Chav Conversations

Walking home from the bus stop today, I noticed a rare sight- two year seven chavs discussing the merits of snow.

Chav 1: " It's like white rain "
Chav 2: " Yeah, but it falls less fast "
Chav 1: " Imagine if, like, ice fell from the sky... that would be, like, well good "
Chav 2: " Oh my God! That so happened to me once "

I then realised why the school had not been closed.

The Owl of Bewilderment

Your tales of flatulence were outlawed by WLW? How unkind! So that's why chaucer wasn't a Ziner. I can't believe WLW is more prudish than the Victorians!

My Great, Great Uncle Harry used to say he " didn't mind the noisy ones- you had fair warning. The ones that sneaked out in carpet slippers were the worst "

The Muddle-Class Intellectual

You played the trump card there. Us, Victorian? Pah!

I must live in the Stone Age. I still listen to cassettes on my Walkman with colossal headphones, buy the odd vinyl now and again, don't have an MP3 player and wouldn 't have a clue where to get a download, legal or otherwise. If it ain't broke, don't rush to compulsively fix it. Long live analogue, death to bytes. Amanda Thomas

Would anyone care to name a more pointless band than grunge clowns Daughtry, please? Rexciter

Satan's Little Helper

i thought what you said in my reply to my list was big-headed.

However, i accept your apology and didn't mean to make you feel horrible. Sorry f i upset you.

i'm glad that you care about the planet, as demonstrated by your comments about light and litter. No hard feelings, eh?

Free songs on MySpace shouldn't be the fault of the downloader. Artists should realise that their music is being bought for nothing. If this is no problem to them, fine. But, otherwise, they should only put previews of songs online and arrange a payment system like PayPal for people who want the full material. Simple, really. Adham

Gerty And Her Onions Golly! Oh thank you for your comments, Hector. I didn't know you cared.

They don't.

The combined looks of Nickelback and Mick Hucknall; the sound of Train and The Fray; all the edge of a knob of butter. I've just seen the voice of Newton Faulkner. So tedious. I'm sure Virgin Radio love him. Carlos Bell

I can solve Tyler Durden's quandary for the Velvet Acid Christ album's £40 cost. Buy The Cribs' new album instead. Without being presumptuous, I'm sure it's miles better and it's only £9. Oh, and Puressence are great. Adam Syntax

Groupies

A terrible thing has happened. I have groupies. It's a horrible affliction, I can tell you.

They never leave me alone- everywhere I go, they're there. I never asked them to be. I never wanted to be accosted everywhere, surrounded by an entourage of little people with constant chatter. No screaming though, thankfully. But since they are, does anyone want a few? I'd pay you...

New Order on Jeremy Kyle is a brilliant idea. Sumner and Morris come onstage to mixed boos, Hooky's sat centre stage. Enter Anton Corbijn as peacemaker. Phil from Marion has his say backstage. Hooky storms out.

Close-up of Phil in shock. Jeremy has a man-to-man with Hooky, then brings him out to applause. After questions from the crowd, Hooky can walk through the left door with New Order or exit stage right for Satellite Party. Jade Webster

Swannery of A New Breed

I heard you mention your love of swans, and it inspired me to write this poem:

Swanny swan,
Oh swan you are so fine,
Why are you working down that mine?
With the dust and the fumes and smog and debris,
Wouldn't you rather be at home, sipping Chalbis?

Francesca Manfranjensen

Er, you're forgetting one thing... Swans are allergic to the dark.

For some good old garage rock, you could do worse than check out American bands like The Greenhornes, Thee Shams, The Grief, The Dirtbombs or Britain's Holly Golightly. Mostly influenced by UK '60s bands like The Yardbirds and The Kinks, they make great music a mile above the generic indie-pop currently infesting the airwaves. China Pig

Townie Tim- Episode # 11

Marty: What are we going to d today, Tim?
Tim: Same thing we do every day, Marty. Trying to get printed on Zine.
Marty: But we never do that.
Tim: Well, we are today, and they don't print townies, so let's kidnap Davord.

Marty: Or you could just not tell them you're a townie.
Tim: Not zany enough. Kidnap it is.

The other side to the downloading debate is that, after following Richard H Kirk of Cabaret Voltaire for 27 years, I couldn't get his last five albums as they're only available on iTunes. Sandy Cowan

Kathryn misfires with her critique of the cover of Razorlight's last album. The most important criteria for a good sleeve is that it must be ironic, and it matches that, better than the bland efort for Up All Night. Mark Muldoon
