Where Did They Go?

Psychedelic Gloom, Plughole Fantasy, Jacobean Skate Punk, Dark Grey Wolf of Norbex. It'd even be good if the possum made a comeback. I don't know where I am any more!

There's a posh ex-military bloke, someone with something to do with a brandname cereal, but Fluffy's still around and now there's me. Yay! On second thoughts, guys, don't return or there'd be no room for me!
Rose of The Annexe

Good point. Wonder whatever happened to Psychedelic 'Pilchard Boy' Gloom?

The theme to the MGMT classic Tom & Jerry cartoons directed by Fred Quimby is not only the greatest cartoon theme but one of the greatest pieces of film and TV music, full stop. It's as evocative seconds from Leo's roar to the start of the action, during which all seems magically right with the world. Kevin Lee

Other than Elbow, I think the only truly great act this decade has been Badly Drawn Boy. Paul Lowe

Lungs Vs Originality

Lungs enable us to respirate, originality enables us to put down the uninspired.
Lungs has five letters, five is a nice, round number.
Originality has 11 letters. 11 is a bad number.
Most can claim they have lungs, not everyone can honestly claim to have originality.1929

I border on originality, but can be quite lungsy when the mood takes.

I'm surprised the debate on best cartoon themes has gone on without any mention of Thomas The Tank Engine. Not only was the theme great, but Junior Campbell and Mike O'Donnell's incidental music for each character on the show was legendary too. Takes me back proper. New Rave Snail

Sugared Venom

You worry me. Call me a traditionalist, but I don't think 15-year-olds should marry. Also, leprechauns have an ancient war with elves. That's basic history.

I am actually quite tall. Pervious relationships ended when I stood on them. As for the gold, ye can stay away from me wee pot o' gold, laddie! Or are ye a lassie? Who cares, as long as ye stay away!

Big Brother

It's that time of year again. OK, let's see what we've learned from the past two years.

If you're a camp Irishman with the view that everything is "eeeeeevilll" or a Scouse builder that goes "eeeh" all the time, you have a chance of winning. If you are a tree hugging hippy (I talk about Sada), everyone will ridicule you. If your name is Nick, Stuart or Helen, don't even bother.

Don't we all hate them? well, I don't think one of us does!

You have probably not noticed (although obviously I have because I am writing this letter) that Big Bop Flapper sounds like Westlife's new single, Bop Bob Baby! So what I think we have on here is a Bop Bop Flapper!
Jezza (In The Chili Soup)

Either way, at least we can all agree that it is one dire, dire single.

Duck Report 2002

Following regular duck feeding in the local park, I can bring some very interesting facts about ducks.

* Most ducks look the same, apart from Stef The Duck, who lives in our local pond. He has a mohican.
* Ducks will accept chocolate Wagon Wheels as a substitute for bread.
* If giving bread, they prefer the sliced variety.

Isn't that interesting?
Queenie Careena

I Have Something To Say

A young cousin the other day contracted hiccups and asked me to shock him to make them stop.

"OK, I said. "The human population is increasingly at an unsustainable rate, forests are being chopped down, oceans are being filled with sewage, there's a hole in the ozone layer and ITV has commisioned another series of Footballers' Wives." "No," he said," Really shock me."

WLW

After months of reading Zine, I am now the world's first fully qualified Zinologist. I have noticed several things in studying Zine:
1 The Brigadier is mentioned more than he writes in.
2 To many people, WLW and Mavis are the number one celebrity couple.
3 B*ckch*t sucks.
4 Eight per cent of all Ziners admit to reading B*ckch*t.

New Debate
Manics Vs The Strokes

To be fair, Piefield can sing in tune (1-0).
Both bands only know four chords each (2-1).
Both have a hideously over-inflated view of their own self-importance (3-2).
Fans of both are equally nauseating (4-3).
The Manics win! I really hate The Strokes.
Parsley Possum

Not much between them, I reckon- both as irritating as a mozzie bite.

How do publications review albums so completely differently? After reading Earls' 5/10 review of U2's new album, I'm intrigued, as Rolling Stone have given it full marks.

Is it down to marketing, pushy record companies? I get annoyed when American magazines give great albums like Oasis' last one terrible reviews, yet do long, monotonous reviews about U2's greatness. US reviews can make or break albums. Aaron O'Neill

I'm surprised no-one picked up on Take That for miming at the Brits. It was a live show and, for all the hype surrounding that talentless four, didn't they sing live? I wish they's split up again. David Hubball

The Beatles are so far ahead of everyone else, why try to compare? The music was expiremntal, but accessible, whereas Radiohead are too intense and bleak. The Beatles are that rarity who both sold and had influence. A McGarvey

Earls has Soft Toy Emergency figured out all wrong. While I admit Jen has a unique voice, I don't think "squeaky" is the correct word. And "hammy" guitars? Perhaps not. But, most of all, the last description I'd give to their single is reggae. Madison Scott

Colour Philosophy

Last night I was walking down the road and the only light was the orange light from the street lamps. I spotted an apple beneath one. But in the orange light I couldn't figure out if it was greeny-orange, orangey-green, orangey-orange or greeny-green. Try it for yourself and see what colour you think it is.

Buying tickets for NME Big Gig starring The Cure has been a disaster. First, NME's ticket agent Trinity Street went bust and we were told to re-purchase our tickets. After re-purchasing, we were told our original tickets would be valid after all, so we'd get refunds for the re-purchased one.

As of Wednesday, I have yet to receive my money back and Ticketmaster is making interest on that money. What a fiasco. Darren Green

I was appalled at Earls' criticism of One Eskimo singer Kristian Leontiou in his review of their Kandi single. Kristian quit doing solo music due to feeling uncomfortable with pressure from the industry. Yet I remember him for his Top 20 album. David wasn't alone in noticing Take That mime at the Brits. They're overrated, living off old fame, and when they split up again their solo albums will once more be a failure. Taz

Aaron shouldn't be surprised at Rolling Stone's gushing review of the new U2 album. They, q and NME are there to serve well-known artists. Magazines like Record Collector and Mojo are better for obscure acts, but stick to PS or Allmusic.com. Tony Christou

Anyone know any words that rhyme with technology? I'm planning a second verse!
Spandorexxa

I think one verse is more than enough, thank you!

I'm shocked at Earls' review of U2's new album. No Line On The Horizon is arguably their best since Achtung Baby. Considering U2 have been going for 30 years, it's a remarkable album. Earls never seems to give decent bands a good review- he's so negative and should cheer up. Start listening to music, rather than looking to criticise all the time. Matt Howlett

Earls: Sorry, Bono. Please don't have me killed.

5 Fun Things To Do In Bromsgrove
(to prove to WLW that there are Ziners in Bromsgrove)

1 Skank on the bandstand
2 Skank in the high street
3 Stand in the way of skaters at the skatepath
4 Put your cap on the back of your head and scream "No way" in a Brummie accent
5 Find some Charford kids and ask them if they're local
The Fishmonger of Doom

I stand corrected, and to think I was going to Spain this year.

I agree with Rich about the state of current hip hop. Chris Brown is tragic, and even Snoop Dogg is making trash these days. The genre peaked in the early '90s with Dre's Chronic, Da Lench Mob and Onyx. Now it's watered-down and bland. Kyle Servera

Kyle Falconer isn't just a ned, he's a gadge. He's a product of environment. He's a product of environment. But that doesn't stop him and his three gadgie pals making quality music and putting on great live shows. Rancel BC

This is my second letter to Zine and, in my desperation to avoid one-hit wonder status, I have conducted a brilliant plan to ensure this gets printed.

Unfortunately, I can't be bothered with it, so I'm just going to resort to old-fashioned begging. Please? Please? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaassssssse?
Schintarella

Well, it worked, didn't it? I must be in such a good mood.

I'm new to the whole Zine world but would like to become a resident. Here's my application form.

I sleep until 2pm on a daily basis.
My favourite food is cheese.
I only pick my nose in public.
I find Jade from BB attractive.

Oops- gone too far. Did I mention I love you, WLW?
Dougie D- Man of Mysteree

You did, but the Jade thing- sort that out pronto.

If your only ambition was to be a complete failure, would you have achieved your goal because you had achieved nothing or not achieved your goal because you had achieved nothing?

Similarly, if you had achieved your goal while this was your ambition, would you have failed your ambition, therefore achieving your ambition and therefore failing in your ambition?

Ziners

I would like to express my hatred for songs that fade out at the end. It's just laziness by the artist. Can you imagine if when watching a film, all of a sudden, the screen just faded?

I for one would be very annoyed.
Alone With Everyone

But then again, some songs just beg to be faded out double-quick.

Susan Or Steph?

George the Duck-Filled Fridge, you're wrong! Susan Kennedy is the best-looking one in Neighbours and everyone knows that. I'm the only solitary member of her fan club, but give me a couple of months and I'll have at least three more!

If she was to squeeze into a pair of hotpants and release a single, she'd definitely give Kylie and Holly a run for their money in the charts.

Things In Adverts It Would Be Great To See In Real Life

The lightbulb "ding" from the Nescafé adverts.

A big long tongue like the one in the Irn Bru adverts (even though I think Irn Bru is rubbish- and I'm Scots!).

OK, so I got stuck after only three... so sue me!
Satan's Rubber Duck

I'd like to see the AOL woman in real life, for obvious reasons.
