I'm afraid the UK is the country. Every international reference point bar football agrees on this. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are constituent regions. (Ireland/Eire is completely separate.)
There's nothing to say a Kingdom can't be a country. Off the top of my head, the Kingdom of Lesotho is most definitely one.
