Hi.

Which bands and CDs do you think it is really silly lots of people like, but you do not like them at-all?
Also, which bands did you think you would like, but you do not?

I am not sure howcome lots of people really like Biffy Clyro and Kings Of Leon. - They are pretty good, sometimes, I think, but it is lots of hype and also Kings Of Leon are number one now, but I do not get it at-all.

I've never managed to understand how anyone can like David Bowie, The Smiths or Manic Street Preachers. And I'm not saying those three to be controversial, I genuinely don't understand why.
What can I say? I did it all for the Wookies.

I'll try not to go for all the easiest targets. Just the ones whose supporters can be reasonably intellectual, so no Nickelback.

(data gathered from last.fm top artists)
Linkin Park (10th, really!?)
Bloc Party
Queen
U2
Marilyn Manson (okay, that's pushing it on the 'intellectual' scale)
Vampire Weekend and most of that Alternative For Ugly People scene
Elvis Presley
NOFX

Not mentioned for the reaction, just because I don't get them, as I've said before:
The Beach Boys
The Beatles
They're just not for me. Influential, yes.

Observation: The Postal Service have a load of listens for a 'band' with just one album. But that's the huge Death Cab crowd on last.fm. They're at 113! And I'm surprised David Bowie's not in the top 20.

That'll do for now.

I thought I'd like The Verve but Urban Hymns really bored me.
I thought I'd like LFTRPLLR/Lifter Puller but it sounds quite messy and bad so far. I'm still determined to hear some more, though.
I thought I'd like Refused but same as with LFTRPLLR.

In my opinion, the mass appeal outside of the mainstream for all three artists she named is very clear, but, as much as it pains me, let's not drive the thread this way.

I've heard quite a few Bowie tracks but I couldn't tell you what albums they were off. As Colin said let's not turn this into an argument/heated discussion thread and just leave it at 'it's not to my tastes and I don't understand why people like it'.

No, I quite agree, I was just thread-drifting slightly. I started out not getting Bowie at all (it was the make up and campness that put me off I think) but his high voice is on top of some the best driving rock 'n' roll about. Not trying to start an argument, just pointing in a direction that showed me where the decent stuff was, a good place to start. I think I respect him more than straight up music-love him, and that's more for his 70s collaborations than Ziggy Stardust stuff.

I was the same with Pink Floyd for ages, but the nursery rhyme blues of Syd Barrett really caught my head for a while. But to get back on topic band I just don't understand the appeal of;

Post-Barrett Floyd
Other guitar slush merchants like Gary Moore
The heavy, heavy stuff, anything heavier and including Metallica
ELO, Yes, all prog really

Radiohead, I understand the appeal but it doesn't really appeal to me, beyond one or two tracks.

Like I said before I've heard a fair amount of his tracks from throughout his career and I just cannot get into it or enjoy it, his voice in particular really grates on my nerves - I feel really wound up after listening to him.

I'm the opposite, can't get into Syd Barrett-era Floyd at all but I like and love a fair portion of their work afterwards (except The Wall, I've never enjoyed listening to that).

The Verve absolutely do my head in...They are so monotonous and that guy has such a whiney, grating voice.

I'm also not a fan of the Muse guys vocals, although I liked 2 songs from the last album which was quite a shock to me.

I really don't get bands like Elbow or Embrace.... I just find them very dull and unoriginal.

You can hardly call Biffy Clyro a hyped band, it took them four albums to get noticed by the mass media.

I second/third/whatever The Doors, also Queen and Oasis (obviously).

And Radiohead are geniuses, you are all wrong.

Yeah you have. You mentioned something about it being obvious but you're the only who sees it. Then i made fun of you for that comment successfully meeting the criteria of paranoid schizophrenic, and being wrong.

Despite just posting a video of such stuff, when metal gets so heavy that the vocalist just chokes out one throat-strain for the whole album, never changing pitch.

Yeah, I think I made this point. Whaddyagonnado?

I've always found it better to concentrate on things you do get, than try to belittle the other things you don't. I don't get half the stuff VRerers listen to, but don't feel the need to continually point it out.

Still all that horrid boom boom techno eh? It's all the same, innit?

Definately not all dance music is rubbish. There are some dance tunes that you cant help but like. For some reason, I really love Pretty Green Eyes. Dunno who its by though. And also the Superdiscount remix of Honest Mistake by the Bravery which was in one of the Burnout games.

Also Overrated:
Queens of the Stone Age
50 Cent
Coldplay (although I'm not quite sure about this. I've started to listen to them a bit more recently and Warning Sign and Clocks are fantastic tunes)
My Chemical Romance
Green Day
Arctic Monkeys

The Verve made one great album and one good one, so I'll let them off.

One band I genuinely don't get are Biffy Clyro. I don't see how they can inspire such devotion - some of their fans are bonkers tbh - when, to me, they just sound like a poor Foo Fighters knock-off. Someone ought to tell them to put some clothes on as well, I'm sick of seeing their pasty torsos every time festival season rolls around.

I can't stand Muse either, but I suppose they do put on a decent live show. Don't know why anyone would want to listen to any of their studio material though.
