A Message From The Other Side

It's not long now before my big night, so I hope you Ziners have lots of treats for me come Halloween.

I'm really looking forward to seeing you all, wrapped up nice and warm, telling ghost stories by the fire. And the pumpkins you make... cute. So don't let me down. Give generously. I will only ask once.

Jack O Lantern

I have a Dr Who-style scarf and a box of toads' innards at the ready.

Peter paints his wagon...

Funny how your tastes change as you get older. I never used to like musicals but watching paint your wagon, cat balou, Singing In The Rain and Summer Holiday has been a great toic while the storm rages outside. Peter, Saxmundham

Quantum of Solace was a disaster of a movie. James, York

The first film I saw at the cinema was Samson And Delilah. I was aged six and my eyes were on stalks. Rosie, Andover

WLW

The spellchecker on my computer always suggests that Zine should be zinger. According to the Oxford Talking Dictionary, zinger means:

* a thing outstandingly good of its kind
* a wisecrack; a punchline
* a surprise question; an unexpected turn of events, eg in a plot.

I believe that all three can be applied to us.

King of The Telegraph Poles

And the most important definition of all: yummy spicy chicken fillety thing.

Socks

Wow- socks are really underrated. Sure it's boring to get plain ones for your birthday, but I think comedy socks (such as Homer Simpson) are amazing and practical and hard to boot!

I peg up my silly socks with pride- long live the comedy sock!

Monk McManus

I'm sensing an equally comic selection of ties and waistcoats here, yes?

End of the world? Yawn.

The world ends, milliions die and God gets rubbished, but mom's apple pie proves unsinkable in Emmerich's latest disaster epic, 2012. Phil, Nuneaton

A Christmas Carol 3D is absolutely amazing. It reminds me of why I fell in love with the cinema in the first place. The sheer magic and joy of the film is a wonder to behold. I implore those who have not seen it to go and watch it as soon as possible. Jim Carrey is superb. Ian, Croydon

Has anyone noticed that fantastic new Ziner called Sykopathk Mushroom? Cool name, cool letters, he seems like a cool kinda guy.

Could you draw a picture of this fantastic new Ziner, or at least his namesake, a mushroom?

And the best movie death is...

Best movie death? It's got to be King Leonidas in 300 getting showered with arrows. Bishop getting torn in two in Aliens is pretty brutal too. Matthew, Islandmagee

There's only one contender for 'Most Misogynistic Film' and that is The Last Temptation of Christ. The Kazantzakis book is also misogynistic. I still haven't forgiven Scorsese for directing this adaptation. Rosie, Milton Keynes

The Matrix

I watched The Matrix for the first time on five the other night. Not a bad film. However, the next day, upon entering school, what did I see but a tall blonde individual wearing a long Matrix-style jacket. How sad can you get?

Of course, I'm not mentioning the pretty cute girl who wore one also... leave me alone, I'm only male!

Any good remake ideas?

As Vortex draws to an end, I wonder what films people would like to see remade? Mine would be Spawn, good premise just mishandled. In the right hands could be amazing. Ryan, Belfast

SR- DVD still has a lot of life in it but would disagree that Blu-ray is too expensive. The costs of players have dropped far quicker than DVD and there are stores selling them from £6! Not to mention that players are backwards compatible with your collection. Vic

Avril Lavigne

Well, I am now a member of teamAVRIL. That means I have to plug Avril Lavigne every so often. So, here goes:

Avril Lavigne is a very hot punk skater chick from Canada who is the best thing since sliced Eminem (and oh, how we'd love to see him sliced up). Go and buy her album, Let Go, and go and buy her single, Complicated, too. It is terrif. Go and buy them!

Colourism

I have some shocking news that may disgust you all, but I have found an appalling example of colourism in the workplace. You may remember what I told you about white potatoes, the multipurpose potato? Well, they have been discriminated against in favour of... red potatoes.

According to the packet, "red potatoes are the superior multipurpose potato". What chance have these poor little white potatoes of being bought now?

The Animal of Farthing Wood

Leone a misogynist?

I'd like to see the Matt Helm movies remade reflecting Donald Hamilton's books, instead of the frothy pre-Austin Powers films that the Dean Martin ones were. Hamilton's Matt Helm was tough, ruthless, and made dirty harry look like a Scout. Jim, Basingstoke

Leone a misogynist?

Hitchcock was sometimes a misogynist director but Sergio Leone beats him. Mainly the women in his films were victims or prostitutes: beaten, r*ped or ignored. Laserdiscs- My box sets seem to have more extras than some DVDs. But my, were they expensive! Dodger, Colchester

JLS have had two No 1 singles, a Mobo and now a No 1 album. Are people mistakenly believing them to be refreshing runners-up with urban sounds from a generic talent show? They're merely town centre fodder, accompanied by (hysterical) Vicky Pollards singing along to them. Rebecca Nahid

I have found an absolute gem of a programme- Late Night Poker! You have to stay up really late (hence 'late night' not 'early afternoon') but it's worth it.

Wrong generation influencing music

My problem with The X Factor isn't so much that it's karaoke, but the middle-aged people are voting for their kids' future pop stars. When I was a teenager, I'd have been gutted if my parents approved, in any way, of my musical taste. Surely this is the first act of rebellion for nearly all young people?

Now you have Simon Cowell, the 21st-century Hughie Green, viewed as some kind of musical saviour. Paul Swann

My New Hobby

When looking for a new hobby, I decided to collect something, but couldn't think what. Coins? Nope. Stamps? Nope. S Club stickers? I think not! Then I had an idea- I'm going to collect Zine page numbers!

So far I've had e-mails printed on pages 1, 7 and 8, so I need e-mails on pages 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 to complete my collection! C'mon, WLW, don't torment me by putting this on 1, 7 or 8!

Evil Tongs

Oh dear- if only I'd read this first.

Impaled Lee fights on

My favourite ruck is the final fight at the end of Lethal Weapon 4 with Jet Li kicking seven bells out of Danny Glover and Mel Gibson, even though he has been impaled. Tony, Salisbury

Lee- I agree. Roland Emmerich is Uwe Boll with a big budget. 2012 is an embarrassing mess. Barrie, Edinburgh

Toy Story, Up! and Wall-E aren't modern animation, they're expensive cartoons. Russ, Walsall

The Geek Who Shall Inherit The Earth I was going to say something really clever and witty, but I've gone blank.

Just as well, so have I.

John (The Man With No Name) Put the money in a brown paper bag and leave it on the bench in the park.

Next to the man with the can and an odour problem.

Evil Tongs What colour would a smurf go if you froze it?

Sort of green-ish. I know because I tried- you know, I was bored- it was a Sunday...

Forum will be missed

Vortex, you will be missed. It has been great hearing people's opinions on films old and new. Vortexters should check out movie-moron.com, it has a great forum. But Vortex, you can never be replaced. Tom, Northampton

My fave war films are Saving Private Ryan, The Great Escape, Bridge On The River Kwai, Platoon and Apocalypse Now. I will miss Vortex more than anything else on Teletext. Thanks, everyone, for your insight. Matthew, Islandmagee

Classic Song Lyrics

After hearing (In)Sane Sarah rightly point out the highly imaginative lyrics to Scooter songs, I decided I just couldn't let this gem go to waste:

"I like it when we kiss, then we hug, then you're cute like a bug in a rug, my love"

Hmmmmm... great lyrics, Ronan!

Emma The Li'l' Angel

Not much of a poet laureate, is he? Or much of a singer, either.

Harry Potter names lifted?

As much as I like the films, the names Harry Potter and the muggles are taken from Carry On Camping. Pete, Aston

How about movies with heroes you can't help detest? Any film starring the charmless Matthew McConaughey or Chris O'Donell. James, York

Mea- A family film should have wit, intelligence, thrills and not be populated with screaming brats. The Goonies, ergo, sucks. Tim, mid-Wales

Lists

For my list, I have compiled a selection of my favourite lists-

1. the 10 best hamster names
2. the things I love about Atomic Kitten (very short)
3. the things I love about B*ckch*t (almost endless)
4. the 5 most fashionable ways to wear a beard
5. this one

Genius At Work

There are 5 ways to wear a beard? Fashionable ways? I think not.

Pretentious Psychology

I love this subject, but it's full of the daftest terminology. I particularly like the working memory labe, with its phonological loop and visuo spatial scratchpad.

Then there's the psychologists! Do you think there's a Smith or a Jones? No, they're all called Craik, Baddeley, Raaijmakers or Quig. Honestly, where do they find these people?

Insane Jam Sow

I'd tell you if I had the faintest idea of what you're talking about.

Haiku

No time for me to introduce myself, it's haiku time:

Have I made my point?
The evidence is there
Hamsters do not bounce.

Oh and WLW? Do not bad mouth mini Jaffa Cakes again.

Sam Got A Snorkel

I wasn't so much bad mouthing them... I just didn't see the point.

(Awful) film still entertaining

Does anyone remember a 3D Nightmare On Elm St, and is it available on DVD? It was (awful) as I recall, but I'd still like to see it again. Gemma, Wirral

I don't take umbrage with misogyny in films, just Hollywood's paradigm for feminine beauty- blonde, skinny or under 30. My favourite actresses- Bridget Fonda, Lucy Liu and Halle Berry- don't meet this criteria, but I'd rather see them than the superficial Megan Fox. Rich, Aylesbury

Well... Well... Well

I'm back, my friends (and enemies). I haven't posted for a while because I was seeing if you could cope without me. Evidently you can't.

So now I'm back, back for good. Please note this phrase has no association whatsoever with a Take That song.

The Man With The Golden Bun

We coped... sorta. Nice to see you again though.
