Admired in confusion

I don't know about gok two, VM. I'm still worried about the anagram that is the original. And yes, WLW, TV texters are in on the game. But I did admire your "gayliner" quip.

That coldplay's yellow was huge despite its mediocre lyrics is good evidence in the debate of lyrics compared to tune. x & y is coldplay's weakest album lyrically, but their stringest record overall. I'd rather them than the lyrically-superior yet tune-inferior Arctic Monkeys, as highly as I rate them. Mark Muldoon

Most post-Sabs ozzy misses the mark, but he deserves credit for having Randy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde play. Tony Vegas

That scoundrel simon cowell proclaimed Leona Lewis's failure to win a Brit will be a "rewarding lesson to her that life isn't fair". What isn't fair is the fastest-selling debut LP ever, while by a talented singer, a dreck that took a year of costly production to produce one semi-decent song.

Next time

Next time on the Pigeon Detectives: With their own dignity at stake, top cop Officer Beaky and chip-crazed maverick P I Geon race to find out the mysterious jack the packer, in the midst of a famine caused by a new littering law in Trafalgar Square.
Meanwhile, Heather lays eggs, but whose can they be?
And Coolumbo makes a mess downtown.

I guarantee at least one of Beaky and Geon won't have a leg to stand on.

According to Radio 2's Sounds of The Sixties, Jimi Hendrix took 40 takes to record Electric Ladyland because he insisted on playing nearly every instrument. That doesn't sound like someone who doesn't know what sounds he wants to produce. Attila

A big forrce hit me

My friend Luke, an avid Star Wars fan, was skydiving the other day. Before his parachute opened, he pretended he was walking on the sky. Oh how we laughed. That's how he ended up with his new nickname, "Schnozzer". He walked into a crow and broke his nose.

A band's image isn't necessarily important, but it makes them more interesting and enjoyable live. One of the reasons I fell for Nirvana is because of how cool Kurt Cobain looked. It made me more proud to be a fan of an awesome-looking band than a David Mitchell-lookalile band like Young Knives. Verses The Chorus

What a fantastic album Neptune by The Duke Spirit is. It's a slow grower, but then you apprecaite the beauty of every song. My only complaint is that Echo Song wasn't included, too good to be a B-side. An early contender for Album of The Year. Max Lees

For the complete trance remix package, try Into The Dark from Ferry Corsten, with its remix from the promising Breakfast and a sensational dub by Ferry himself. Ben Wilkinson

On the subject of image, in metal, let's say I was given photos of two unsigned bands. One has short hair and blue jeans. The other, long hair, black jeans and New Rock boots. I'd see the latter every time, because they'd look the part and not like they'd just come from their day jobs. Jed Kelly

I was merely making an amusing comment about Paddy Irishman's letter, not slating him.

What a shame for Thom Yorke. Every day when I get up at 6am to go to work for 10 hours or more, I think to myself "It could be worse. At least I don't have to go to a recording studio." I love In Rainbows but, come on, Thom. "Going through the mill" to make it? Get real. adam syntax

I wholeheartedly endorse Cybermod's views reagarding aesthetic pygmies in music. Of course they should be able to write songs, but it's beyond the pale to allow them to perform publicly to look the part.

At least make an effort to wear showbiz clothes and a mask, if you're of the gingery-whiskered variety like Thom Yorke. I am aesthetically wanting, and should not be allowed within a mile of a stage. Peter Pinsent

I don't know where to start with Cybermod's vacuous views. Perhaps Radiohead are "unable to write a catchy melody" because of their lack of gold chains and shades. Fortunately for him, the charts are clogged with overhyped, talent-free muppets who look good. Garion

If I had to choose one band to reform, it'd be Talk Talk. During the '80s, they went from catchy synthpop to avant-garde brilliance. It's been over a decade since Mark Hollis's only solo album, and I'd love to see them back to show up today's acts. Shane Damien

Dressing down on stage is as much a choice as dressing up. springsteen still chose to go on stage in denims and a check shirt long after he could afford a new diamond-encrusted Armani suit every day.

Just like other bedenimed musicians such as Rory Gallagher, Radiohead or Status Quo, his choice of clothes was to project an image just as much as bowie, Scissor Sisters or Girls Aloud's glitter and heels do. dj gordy

Tying in two recent debates, I was sad when Audio bullys' album, Ego War, didn't see them become as big as The Prodigy. We Don't Care is one of my favourite songs of the decade, but they've disappeared since the Nancy sinatra duet three years ago.

Until American Life, Madonna's album, Bedtime Stories, was seen as her weakest, but I think it's the most underrated of her career.

It's got a nice R&B vibe. While Human is a little dated, songs like Secret, Take A Bow and Inside of Me are better than anything on the overrated Music. For me, Ray of Light is Madonna's best album, but Bedtime Stories is her undiscovered gem. Shane Damien

Paul McCartney deserved his Brit award, but his transformation into Daniel O'Donnell on songs like Dance Tonight and his dad-dancing vid is irrefutable.

It needn't take decades to do something outstanding and, for exporting pop at a level other British artists only dream of, The Spice Girls deserved their own Outstanding Contribution prize. Their Hits album only had a limited release in the US, and Macca has had flop albums too. Peter Pinsent

mondo-Zine: A great day

Great things that happened on July 22. 2007, floods bring chaos to England. 1946, after a failed wheat harvest, bread is rationed is Britain. Best of all, the pied piper steals all the children from the town of Hamelin in return for non-payment on the solving of a small rodent problem. The point?
Woo-hoo! It's my birthday!

mondo ray

More importantly, it's now the day Zine (finally) went online.

In the lyrics debate, Deathspell Omega and Nile demonstrated the power of words in songs. You don't need to know exactly what the lyrics are when the albums are on, just being aware of them adds to the atmosphere. They fascinate people who don't normally care for metal and can be enjoyed as a separate experience. Mark de sade

Bob Dylan is the lyric king. Check out It's All Right, Ma or My Back Pages. Andy McGarvey

mondo-Zine: A peak at mondo's ray

So that was you, mondo, peeking at me over a copy of Twinkle. That purple jumper didn't go with the lime green trackie jumper.

gothic fairy

Just be thankful he was wearing the trackie bottoms that time.

What do looks have to do with music? I'd rather have a troll with a great voice like van morrison than a handsome screecher like Mika. Dante Banks

I'm thankful for "that arrogant g*t" roger waters and the rest of pink floyd. Without them, the prog rock era may not have happened. So King Crimson, Yes and modern bands like Dream Theater may not have started, or been very different. Lyrics? It depends on the song. Ben Carlton

mondo-old ray

mondo, thy hast contradicted thyself. On Friday, you stated that only gothic fairy had entered your competition, yet here you are acknowledging my letters. Also, last week, you altered the spelling of my name. Stick to the wit, Old Timer.

Douglas Butterdflanks

Old timer? Your timing is either impeccable or awful. I can't decide.

I thought it was Katie Melua and not Joss Stone in the new Flake advert. Maybe that's because, when I hear Melua sing, I feel like I've been force-fed 2, 000 bars. Vince McRaincoat

Andrea thinks Muse's B-sides are poor due to not putting in enough effort? I think not. Try playing Glorious, In Your World, Fury, Shrinking Universe or Futurism for a start. Some of their singles are padded out with live songs, but some are great. Blissfully Aware

mondo-Zine: Whizzo wind-up

WLW, mondo and daddypoos, I've hit on a whizzo way to wind people up. On the TV, sport and 326, just send Zine-type drivel on the chosen subject and people try so desperately to shoot you down in flames, they must get blisters on their fingers. Tarantara!

Red Route Renegade

Shall we just go for a clean sweep of mondo-name-checking letters? Why not (that's rhetorical, Princess)?

With her Rockberry album, I think it's now safe to say that this year's various Best Female awards are in the bag for Duffy. Also, unless the Mercury Prize panel break with tradition and acknowledge Radiohead, it should be a certainty that the lass will be £20, 000 richer in September. Les Vegas

The Last Shadow Puppets' single is epic. It reminds me of Ennio Morricone's western theme. Eddie You

mondo-Zine: Two Ps in a pod

I would suggest that Douglas was being presumptive rather than pedantic, as being suggestive doesn't account for knowledge being factual. Therefore, Douglas couldn't be ostentatious with knowledge that didn't exist. Actually, I am now being pedantic.

Mackie O'Velly

And so ends the first (and last) edition of mondo-Zine.

I'm glad to see that metal will be getting an improved coverage on Planet Sound. I rely on you, as I don't buy Kerrang! or Metal Hammer and have little access to the web. I didn't know monster Magnet's 4 Way diablo was out until three weeks late, as you missed it, so I'm glad you're rectifying pas mistakes as I love Planet Sound. Scary Guy
