Monkey's around

Y'know, if you got an immortal monkey to typewrite letters to Zine randomly forever, it would eventually produce this exact letter: HELP ME RSPCA THEY'VE GOT ME TYPEWRITING RANDOM LETTERS FOREVER.

Vigilante Monkey

An immortal typewriting monkey? Don't give the Teletext HR department ideas.

Jetstream by New Order has bad lyrics. The song has a dodgy air travel theme and has such gems as "Leave your baggage behind/ You won't need it tonight/ Enjoy your flight" and the chorus "J-e-t/ You are so good for me/ You are my jetsream lover/ You're how I wanna be."

How Ana Matronic from Scissor Sisters allowerd herself to be involved in such monstrous by duetting on it is a mystery. Pat Palloon

My fillum idea

In a time of war... in a time of great danger... in a time of unending pain... There is only one man... One man who can end it all... And that man is vanessa feltz. Coming this Fall... vanessa feltz is... Annoying: Enough to make the bad guys surrender just to make her shut up. Rated T for troublesome in the head.

Paddy Irishman

Let me get this straight, you're not a fan of the feltz?

Jimi Hendrix was a legend, but he did tend to disappear up his own backside a bit. Most disappointing gig? Bad Company in 1978. Al Bundy

Unfashionable views? michael jackson's '90s albums are better than his '80s work. dangerous is a great pop album, with songs like who is it and give into me much better than anything from thriller. history is painfully autobiographical in places. Matt Dodwell

Disappointing gigs? I had to leave an Echo And The Bunnymen gig at London Astoria in 1979 after the songs, because the support act was so amazing that staying would have been an anti-climax. Who were they? U2, when they were good. Dante Banks

Who would you rather listen to on a Sunday morning, D*ck & Dom on Radio 1 or Russell Howard and Jon Richardson on 6 Music? Two of the best young comics, passionate about music. Jellybean

Best producer is Mike Clink, whose work on g'n'r's appetite for destruction is flawless. It's still fresh after 21 years. Tony Vegas

I'm surprised Lawrie voted for Jim Abiss as his favourite producer. The Music are an incredible live band, and they'd have been more successful if Abiss had harnessed their debut album into capturing those gigs' enegy. His Arctics work is pedestrian compared to their gigs. Goranoia

Blunt as ever

I see that James Blunt song Babylon is being used to torture people. Much like White Flag by Dido or having a naked Keith Chegwin, it is a cruel and unnatural punishment. I thought James Blunt was Cockney rhyming slang.

The only Kylie album I own is Hits from her post-SAW period, with songs like Put Yourself and Confide In Me. Then came Indie Kylie, which got a lot of flak, but her more mature style then is more interesting than anything she's released since 2000. Shane Damien

It's interesting to see Bauhaus reformed to release one album before splitting up again. Maybe they found out that reforming was so enjoyable that, after splitting up again, they will reform again.

Alternatively, if the reunion was so traumatic, they may need counselling, necessitating a reunion to pay the bills. After Planet Sound give the album 8/10, maybe they'd be persauded to reform anyway. Richard Penguin

I'd like to thank Trident chewing gum for reminding me of how exciting The Crimea are. It's been an age since I last heard Loop A Loop or listened to the Secrets of The Witching Hour album.

The fact that I was able to listen to this song, and the entire album, free from their website, long before Radiohead gave us the chance to name our price on In Rainbows, is testament to the greatness of a relatively obscure band. Paulio

Radiohead think that, by trying to be weird, they can fool people into thinking there's something deeper going on. It's to cover up the fact they wouldn't know how to write a catchy melody if they depended on it.

Music is the most important thing. But all the great bands of the last 50 years recognised the importance of image: from the clothes to the album covers. The best bands have great songs and look great. The Cybermod

I understand Pinsent's annoyance that Paul McCartney sang live when he closed the Brits. He should be ashamed of himself, not miming like The Spice Girls. To get an Outstanding Contribution after only 45 years in music was unfair next to Spice's long wait.

Headlines reached No 90 in the US chart and the Best Of made 93. A monumental achievement but, as Pinsent doesn't like to brag about Spice, I expect it's why he didn't mention it. DF Fogle

Some (not all) of Jimi Hendrix's performances were not in tune. Try his Woodstock rendition of The star Spangled Banner. If you think that's in tune, you're tone deaf. I'm a musician, and many others I know also don't rate him. Nick Sloyan

Ghe: a clarification

I have this embarrassing problem. It started when I saw Chris Kamara on the telly and announced to the world that he looked like Guy Ritchie, the really creepy guy who stalked blind girls and sang at them. Of course, I didn't mean Madonna's (exish) husband, but who cares? They both suck.

Image is irrelevant. When you listen to an album, you don't see what a band looks like. The music, the lyrics, the atmosphere, technical musicianship and the atmosphere they invoke are more important. Only the shallow will ever listen to a band based on their image. Ronnie Bradley

If The Cybermod doesn't like radiohead, that's fine. But why does he imagine there's some conspiracy for them to "be weird" and con people? It's arrogance to assume that, if you don't enjoy something, anyone who says so is a deluded liar. Jonno

Justin Timberlake is more annoying than bin laden. Every video he does, he's looking moody in black, sat in hotel rooms, with timbaland and an array of transs*xual looking models in softcore posing. It's dull. He's ugly. Rebecca Nahid

The whole package with music counts. You can't separate image, style, looks, attitude, music, lyrics and production. Frightening how many "Britain's Got Talent" drop-outs ended up there. So far, I've seen girls in pants ("Burlesque") and a man who plays movie themes on a Pound Store keyboard. So has WLW been missing my sweet and innocent ways?

As a musician himself, Nick believes his opinions on Jimi Hendrix being out of tune are more credible. Yet Miles Davis, Jaco Pastorius and Gil Evans expressed admiration for Jimi. According to Nick's logic, their views should take precedence over his. Unless Nick and his mates operate on a higher plane than jazz legends. Tony satan

New topic: albums that flopped. I'm puzzled why Regeneration by The Divine Comedy did. It's ace. Paul Lowe

Tsh!

Cake Or Biscuit WLW. Like your B-dum, but prefer your Tsh!

B'dum'dum-tsh! I don't mind tsh-ing for compliments.

Ted O I have a challenge. The word laser is an acronym. Can anyone tell me what it means?

If only there was a website where I could type in "laser" and "acronym" and it would search for the answer.

The worst lyric is yellow by coldplay. I'm not going to quote it. You know how it goes. How it became a hit, I'll never know. As for unfashionable views, when things succeed, it becomes cool for people to knock them: Arctics, RHCP, Pete Doherty and, yes, coldplay. John Minor

Hendrix's Star Spangled Banner was deliberately out of tune. It was a comment on the broken, dysfunctional US society of the time. John Moore

Pointless

mr mondo, your competition is pointless. Other pages are for bored housewives and idle wasters with nothing interesting to say. Zine is the only page worth reading and long may it continue!

Like Vince, I'm saddened that ozzy osbourne, having helped created a new genre of music with Black Sabbath's metal, has ended up performing as the village in his egomaniac wife's travelling freakshow.

Some people, ozzy included, claim sharon saved his career. I think she just diluted his brilliance into making pathetic soft rock for the US masses. His post-Sabbath output is, to say the least, cringeworthy. Kev O'Neill

Why, oh why?

Why does The Gutless Wonder slate Paddy Irishman? I am a regular reader and I think he is insightful and articulate. And regarding his eye liner comment, can I just enquire where he buys from?
Answers on a post card to reach us by next Tuesday.
LOL.

Vive la revolution!

It's Bastille Day, when the French celebrate the storming of the Bastille to liberate four forgers, two "lunatics" and one "deviant" aristocrat. Makes you want to put on twisted puppet shows for the neighbourhood children which will affect them later in life. Which is how I celebrate Bastille Day.

RIP, Jeff Healey. What a sad loss of a wonderful talent. On the two occasions I caught him live in Sheffield, he was on blistering form, though he could play the sweet stuff too. Craig Wells

Jeff Healey was a wonderful guitarist and a charming, unassuming man, who I had the pleasure of meeting after a gig at Manchester Apollo in 1990. He will be missed. Johnny Whitesox
