Indy returning yet again?

Does anyone know if there is going to be a fifth Indiana Jones? I heard they were planning it but that was months ago. Also, I just watched Blade Runner- I don't know why everybody loves it, it was rubbish. Daniel, London

Clever Cats

DeLorean- are you friends with the writer Ben Goldacre? He has a cat with a PhD. Or do you, like me, just read Guardian Weekly's Bad Science section? Confess!

If it's the former, I really envy you. Oh, and I thought the cat was dead... I must be wrong then.

Witty One-Liners

WLW, do you have a part-time job coming up with advertising one-liners? Today I saw a van belonging to a company offering vacuum services. It had the words "Our business sucks, but it is really picking up" painted on it.

That's pretty much on a par with the average page one comment like "there'll be h*ll toupee".

My Uncle is so evil at this time of year. In the past he has heated up a few pound coins in the oven and when the little brats come along trick or treating, he handed them the coins (himself protected) and gave their hands a sizzling.

Every opinion counts

Why can't people accept every person has different views? Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I didn't like Dark Knight, Braveheart, Gladiator or Kill Bill. But I respect a person's opinion if they liked these. Films I have enjoyed are anything with Jason Statham, Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler in them. I liked Straightheads, both Transformers movies and just about anything Marvel. Movies I am looking forward to are The Expendables, New Moon and Book of Eli. Shibz, Burton

Gore no good without story

t rivers- I agree it's about different tastes and I don't expect anyone to agree with mine. But I also think gore for the sake of it is usually at the expense of good plots, dialogue and acting which, to me, are prerequisite to a good film. V Olliver has again let his fervent religiosity slip into his reviewing. Creation is a "soft piece of propaganda for Darwinism"? Does he realise most of the educated world has accepted evolution as scientific fact? Maybe Vic should be a speech writer for Sarah Palin. David, London

The new Charlotte Hatherley

By John Earls

"I think I must be aged about 60 in rock years."

Charlotte Hatherley is about to release her third solo album, New Worlds, her most eclectic to date and yet carrying the same effervescent escapism that made her first two underrated joys.

"The first two were a reaction to Ash in some way," says Charlotte. "This is the first one where I feel like I really know what I'm doing."

After the lengthy recording of her second album, The Deep Blue, Charlotte made New Worlds in just a week.

"I wanted a very live-sounding record," she explains. "If it didn't work with me and my drummer, we abandoned it.

"It was partly financial- I couldn't afford another long studio album. People think I made a lot of money from Ash, and it's not the case. Every penny goes back into running my label."

Partly as a reaction to what Charlotte calls the "bleak state of the music industry," the album's over-riding theme is of trying to make life colourful.

"So much modern culture is disposable," she says. "Like the free London papers that are full of lies.

"I don't want to sound negative- I'm a full-time musician, but it's hard to keep my head above water. I wanted a fun, upbeat record."

Charlotte turned 30 in June, having spent half her life in bands since joining Nightnurse when she was 15.

"It's always a milestone age for women," she admits. "You have to confront the idea of having babies.

"The lead-up felt traumatic, but the week itself was so hectic. I played Glastonbury, my best friend got married and I had a brilliant day in Paris with my girlfriends.

After so long as a touring musician, Charlotte wants to start cutting down.

"It's hard, because touring is the only way to make money as a musician now that record sales are down," she says.

"But it's becomew more important to me to start spending time with friends and loved ones. The reality is, you lose out on intimacy as a touring musician. You always pop in and out of people's lives, not making strong bonds."

However, Charlotte has loved being part of Bat For Lashes' touring band, as well as her recent solo shows.

"Playing with Natasha, where I wasn't just a guitarist, taught me a lot. Part of that was about presenting a show; it was far from turning up in t-shirt and jeans like I was used to for ages!"

New singles by John Earls

NATALIE IMBRUGLIA Want 8/10

"Slinky" isn't often a word associated with Imbruglia's music, or co-writer chris martin, but her comeback is playful and smart disco that's nowhere near as stern as her past ballads. One listen, and the chorus lodges forever.

SUCKERS It Get Your Body Movin' 8/10

Not exactly dance, the drowsy, horn-led sway is like Sufjan Stevens fronting Calexico, backed by a gospel choir. Mysterious, eloquent and, yes, moving.

1/6.

STORNOWAY

"No-one ever said this would be problem free," sings Brian Briggs, yet this makes for two stirring singles out of two. Briggs' vocals wander around a vast range, guitars build to an excellent scream, the strings soar with a rare grace. The best new band around.

MAMAS GUN Routes To Riches 7/10

A decent effort at classic funk, which would have Lenny Kravitz weeping with jealousy. Bit of a cheesy chorus, mind.

2/6.

DEAD BY SUNRISE Crawl Back In 5/10

Who asked for Chester Bennington of Linkin Park's side-project? In fairness, the glam guitar intro is surprisingly good fun and even Bennington sings well for, ooh, 45 seconds. Then the chorus starts, and it's his usual ineptitude.

BOY CRISIS The Fountain of Youth 4/10

The grim side of the '80s revival, the New Yorkers may use synths but are as naff and over-polished as Hall And Oates. Irritatingly ironic buffoonery.

3/6.

ECHO AND THE BUNNYMEN I Think I Need It Too 8/10

Their best ballad in some time, if it had been released in their heyday it would have attained classic status. Ian McCulloch is both grandiose and wistful, Will Sergeant's guitars sway, all is well in the ground.

KINDNESS Swinging Party 5/10

A Replacements cover that adds an all-too-minimal, ineffectual groove behind vocals that are the wrong side of wispy. Too fey to swing.

4/6.

MUMFORD AND SONS Little Lion Man 6/10

While there's a bite to Marcus Mumford's vocals, it's hard to see why there's such widespread praise lavished on them above all the other folk-rock acts, when there's an overblown air that resembles Waterboys on an off day.

THE HORNBLOWER BROTHERS Adventures In The National Geographic 5/10

As cute as their Vampire Weekend v Housemartins brittle funk is, the deliberately geeky vocals need to be sorted out soonest.

5/6.

THE DRUMS Let's Go Surfing 8/10

The cutest whistling riff since Young Folks, the New Yorkers add handclaps, rolling, giddy vocals and a Strokes-y guitar. Although it's possibly too good to be true, by the third verse, the chorus is being sung whether you think it's contrived or not.

UNGDOMSKULLEN Idunno 5/10

Overtly arch party-metal guitars, naff solos and irksome, try-hard rawk vocals... not their finest hour.

6/6.

Things To Do During

School fire drills.

- Arrive at the assembly point with a plastic bag stuffed with school computers. If questioned, say:"I figured we were practising what we'd do if there was a fire."
- Dive through the closed classroom window. As the class gaze in shock, turn around and leap in through the hole in the window again. Grab the fire extinguisher, hop back out again, and sprint off.

Ian Brown/ My Way

By John Earls

Twenty years after The Stone Roses' debut, Brown finally makes the solo record he's capable of.

As confident and ambitious as his public persona, Brown knuckles down to recreate the funk of his life, dominated by huge bass and insouciant horns, plus some Hacienda house chaos.

With the ballads Brown's most tender and reflective songs to date, it's mature but h*llishly fun too. 8/10

1/8.

Vitalic/ Flashmob

After a long gap since his OK Cowboy debut, Belgian producer Pascal Arbez returns with an almighty racket.

The best clattering dance album since Justice, it's an absolute whirlwind of beats, impassioned diva vocals and a sense that, for the hour the album is on, all cares can be lost in hedonism.

For all its apparent carefree disorder, it's brilliantly structured, not least in its impeccably flowed mood. 9/10

2/8.

Liam Frost/ We Ain't Got No Money, Honey, But We Got Rain

Delayed due to label wrangling, it's emergence is a heartwarming triumph.

The shivering ballads from his debut are here again, if anything even more ntense as Frost's rich, strongly-accented croon grows ever steelier.

It's leavened by a clutch of tingling celebrations, with Orchestra of Love and Martha Wainwright duet Your Hand evidence of a new variety. He's as good as traditional troubadours get. 9/10

3/8.

Hope Sandoval And The Warm Inventions/ Through The Devil

Eight years after their debut, Sandoval and Colm O'Coisoig return.

You can guess how intimate and smoky the songs are, which provides a mixed blessing. It's always a treat to hear Sandoval's unadorned vocals. O'Coisoig knows they don't need furnishing, with the zither-led Fall Aside gorgeous.

As on the wispa A Willow, it can be too pared-down, the voice masking underdone songs. Lovely, but no surprises. 7/10

4/8.

Kid Harpoon/ Once

Four years after his first EP, Tom Hull finally finishes an album, with Trevor Horn surprisingly producing.

Horn's first attempt at producing an indie singer-songwriter is superb, polishimg what could have been rickety rackets into sterling, sparkling pop.

Hull's varied writing shines too, as at home on Marianne's breathless joy and Colours' homespun charm as on the expected ballads. Worth the wait. 8/10

5/8.

Maps/ Turning The Mind

Two years after his Mercury-nominated debut, James Chapman is back, with Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas co-producing.

Elements of his fragile shoegazing remain, Chapman's voice still hushed and the guitars are swirling like M83.

But he's diversified into classic Vince Clarke-style synthpop too, with a handful of surprisingly danceable moves worthy of Pet Shop Boys and even some vintage house. A bold step up. 8/10

6/8.

Andrew Weatherall/ A Pox On The Pioneers

After 20 years of producing Primal Scream to F*** Buttons, Weatherall finally makes his debut solo album.

Despite his geezerish reputation, Weatherall's voice is high and delicate- it generally suits the cavernous dub and metronomic Krautrock well.

Indeed, it's the instrumentals that fare less well, tricksy at the expense of the song.

Surprisingly melodic, it's a viable alternative career.

7/8.

The Witch And The Robot/ On Safari

The debut by a Lake District quartet, championed by British Sea Power.

Their proggish clowning about is more fun for them than the listener, especially because they'd have a great album if they focussed more on their songwriting, not windy self-indulgence.

There are sweet, soft vocals, an eerie desolation and a Beta Band-y energy... but also meandering jams, spoken word goonery and dragging on too long. 5/10

8/8.

Giraffe Rides

I picked up a giraffe from "Giraffes Are Us". On the way home, I opened the sunroof so he could stick his head out.

You should have seen him: wind was blowing through his stubble, his nostrils were flaring. It was such great fun.

Until we came to the low bridge.

Daddypoos

Funnily and paradoxically enough, I don't find that story very funny.

"... So You!"

"That bag is SO you!" I heard tell of an acquaintance's acquaintance. Now, what exactly did she mean?

Can bags talk, walk or think? No. Implying the poor lass is thick then? Hollow, obviously, quite possibly in the head. Again supporting the previous statement. Ah. It reads "Revolves around me." Selfish. Well... self obsessed. Oh, the bag is itchy too. Irritants. Aha. True.

jack nicholson's greatest roles

I have no idea how anyone can call jack nicholson a bad actor! These are obviously young people who hasn't seen him in Chinatown, The Last Detail, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Terms of Endearment. John, Monmouthshire

Ian & Sean- jack nicholson has much more range than you give him credit. Check out About Schmidt, The Pledge, The Last Detail, chinatown and Five Easy Pieces. Paul, Plymouth

Some Advice

Hey, dudes. Don't let life get you down. Should you despair over a relationship gone bad, this is what you should do:

Think of the person who has never known what it's like to love, and to be loved in return.

How very cheesy, dudette. Now I fancy a stilton and pear baguette.

The Dark Knight splits opinion

I don't think there should be another Dark Knight sequel. It would never be as good as the last film was. Nick, Bromley

Shibz, Burton- While you're spot on about people's opinions about movies, you are wrong about Dark Knight. It is rubbish and no other opinion, unless described worse than rubbish should be allowed by anyone!!! Mark, Newtownabbey

Sure, I'm a major player in the fish shrinking business, but that doesn't mean you can talk to me in a tone comparable to that of a nasty milkman giving a dressing down to a shy bat.

Flavoured Toothpaste

I agree that there should be flavoured toothpaste, but I'm not sure about chocolate. Apparently there was a company in America which made chocolate toothpaste, but then loads of people's teeth fell out, and they got sued!

If it were up to me everything would taste of Bonjela. Mmm, Bonjela toothpaste.

Limericks

I have noticed the rather large lack of literary contributions. But I was digging around in the archaeological site that is my bedroom floor and I found a book of limericks, so here, ladies and gentlemen, is my donation:

There once was a gnu in a zoo,
who was rather tired of the view,
to seek a new site,
he stole into the night,
and where he went nobody knew.

Genius.

Foola Hoola

Keep rummaging around that "super" book of limericks.

Awkward Silenc

Do you want to know what I really hate? Awkward silences. Argh, they're so awkward. I wish people were programmed to shout something, anything, like "sporadic baton twirling" to break the silence instead of embarrassing coughing or giggling.

So if I were God, they would be banished to the land of pink flying monkeys as well as Linda Barker and slugs. So...

Enchanted Rose

If it wasn't for awkward silences we'd be dating some right weirdos.

Bloc Party

I'm back and I've just been to see Bloc Party at Brixton. They weren't that good, although I did lose myself in the music and dance like a nutter with a guy that danced like Bez. How can you dance like that to Bloc Party?

At least they weren't as bad as Patrick Wolf, who nearly sent me to sleep. Luckily I was in the seated area as if I was in the standing I'd have got trampled on as I lay on the floor, napping.
