The Great Rock Star

I can't have been the only one to notice while watching Kerrang, Q, Scuzz, that so many rock stars are missing shirts. For example, the Chilis. Other people guilty of not affording shirts include that guitarist from SOAD with the cool beard, Soulfly, Perry Farrell (of Jane's Addiction fame) and Fred Durst.

Maybe we should set up a fund.

My Little Reply

Recently I have had my fair share of criticism on these 'hallowed' pages.

Luckily it doesn't anger me in the slightest as I have a method for managing anger. I push all the anger down and store it as potential anger energy on my ankles.

It is then inexplicably turned into food which I feed Matt in his luminous purple box of doom.

As a Monster Magnet fan, I see where Efils God is coming from in his confusion over the title track of Tab 25. It's a sprawling, 32-minute song and if you listen to it intently you can get bored. But, if chilling out, the beat is hypnotic. Be careful listening to Dopes To Infinity, though, it's impossible to get off your playlist. Scary Guy

The new songs Crowded House played at Sherwood Pines sounded great, with Either Side of The World standing out. They're one great band. Tony Parsons

I agree with Earls's 6/10 review for Fleet Foxes. They're brilliant live, an easy 9/10. For some reason, though, the album is as lacklustre and doesn'tm do them justice. By contrast, their touring partners Beach Housed didn't come over so well on stage, but their album is better than Foxes. DJ Gordy

Your music taste is as unique as your personality, and it's one of the things that makes you interesting. I've waited 15 years to see Radiohead, and they were good rather than great on Tuesday in London. They didn't play many of their better known songs, so I was disappointed with the set. Also, as gates opened at 4.30 pm, only having Bat For Lashes as support was a strange decision. Tony Tudor

Sad Story

Cecil was a singer who suffered from excessive sibilance. He succeeded by selecting his songs sagaciously. All went well until he received a request to sing a saucy song about 66 sozzled sailors from Sausalito. He was never asked to sing again.

His speech impediment was cured and he was ready to make a comeback when he died from a disease with an unpronounceable name.

Why are rappers not welcomed at rock festivals? I was annoyed to hear of the racism the admittedly bad Lethal Bizzle endured at Download. However, Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers to make music, yet the level of hate by many towards him at Glastonbury is almost as discriminative as racism.

If a white artist was met with the same disgust at a predominantly black hip hop show, there would rightly be outrage. Leon Mills

I'm with Habanero over the crowd at Radiohead's London gig. People who go to concerts that aren't fans of the band are annoying. I've often been surrounded by people who look as if they haven't a clue who the band are, while friends desperate for tickets couldn't get them. Queen B

After the letter about Danielle Dax, my own "Whatever happened to?" would be Kingmaker. They were one of the few genuine indie guitar bands of the early '90s. After a couple of decent albums with several stonking anthems, they split, never to be heard of again.

Too late for punk and too early for Britpop, they were supported on tour by an unknown band called radiohead and got slated in NME by Paul Heaton. That's not a bad CV at all. Nicko

Only 5/10 from Earls for Radiohead's gig on Tuesday? Pfft, if they were off form then, the Wednesday was stonkingly great. House of Cards, and a jolly singalong to Karma Police were lovingly received, while an ace Paranoid Android made for a barnstorming exit. Moi

How very strange

One day, I decided that I'd be better off without this place.
One day, 3 A levels, 1 AS level, 44 Saturdays at H&M, four plane flights, six crushes, two new phone numbers, four haircuts, six hair dyes, 250 pairs of disposable contact lenses, 55 nail varnishes, 150 pizzas from Pizza Hut, one iPod, 60 visits to the cinema, 1000 hours on the internet later, I returned.

Val Doonican

His influence on modern music is enormous. In 1974, on his legendary TV show, all the buttons from his cardigan fell off and his jeans ripped, and so grunge was born. he might have sworn many times but he asked for a safety pin, thereby inventing punk.

Although there is some debate over his influence on rap, hip, be-bop, doo-wop and boogie, there is no doubt he is a very nice fellow indeed.

I'm not keen on the new Oasis album title, I'd rather it were the falsely-rumoured Blue Moon.

I like what Noel Gallagher's said about the single being recorded so quickly, though, it makes me optimistic that it'll be a top tune. I'm itching for a return of my beloved band. Considering Radiohead made a bug deal of only playing venuew with good public transport links on their tour, why was the London gig at Victoria Park?

It took 50 minutes to walk back to Mile End, a tube station whose pokey entrance was so inaccesible for the large numbers of people, it had to be guarded by police dogs. With their resources, this seems bad planning. Great gig on the Wednesday, I don't know about Earls's one. Fi Watson

Jay-Z this, Winehouse that. Is Glasto not a festival to celebrate music in general? Kings of Leon were great, Elbow outstanding, Jay-Z triumphant, Massive Attack comnmanding, Eddy grant reminding us, John Mayer surprising us.

I mostly enjoyed the BBC's Glastonbury coverage apart from how, every time I tuned in on Sunday, I was confronted by Mark Ronson. Good producer he may be, but is there a smugger man in music? If ruining innumerable songs on record isn't enough, we get him doing it live with a motley crue of anodyne singers and session musos.

Well done, Michael Eavis. Glastonbury was back to basics this year, all about the bands. Editors, Elbow, The Ting Tings and so on, not big corporate Coldplay/ Oasis who draw "I've been to Glastonbury" socialite poseurs. Whitesox

i don't have an opinion on Queen's music. But was it an exercise in irony on the part of the organisers to have them play at Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday gig, having played sun city in the apartheid era? Disco Stu

My advuce to anyone going to see My bl8ody valentine is to leave before the last song, an impression of a jet engine played dangerously loud for 35 minutes. There's no tune or anything resembling a rhythm. I've enjoyed metal for 20 years and can pick tunes out of discordant mess, but not that racket.

A colleague had a sound meter, and it measured 140 db. Efils God

Void: MBV's gigs are notorious for always ending on that song.

After Earls's 5/10 review, I was a bit apprehensive over the new Sigur Ros. However, I was ecstatic that even Earls can get his reviews wrong. What I heard was one of the best albums of '08, and possibly Sigur's best work yet. To anyone having doubts, don't worry. Let your hearts be close to angels. Les Vegas

TheUnitedTruth I went to buysome camouflage trousers, but I couldn't find any.

Shame you didn't run out of stamps at the same time.

Stalking Myself I've just come out fo the closet! But I tripped over the bed, so if anyone's passing my house, could you please come in and give me a hand up.

Can't be bothered.

I'm not so sure that Jay-Z was a triumph at Glastonbury. I watched two minutes of his butchering of Wonderwall and switched off. I don't care if the rest of his performance was good. Guitar music is what Glastonbury is about. Who's handling next year? Girls Aloud, opening with Cigarettes And Alcohol? John Ox

For Jay-Z to open with Wonderwall was class. As for Winehouse hitting a fan? Eat your heart out, John Prescott. ID

Jay-Z's introduction and Wonderwall cover were almost worth the Glastonbury ticket price alone. Whether he meant it or not, he made the Oasis more accurate by singing out of tune. Adham

What did people expect of Amy Winehouse at Glastonbury? She was in hospital the week before. I went to see Nick Holloway recreate my acid house years, and he was amazing. The Verve were awesome, as was the whole of Oasis. Mango Strangler

What rubbish of Pashkova to say in her Glastonbury review that Ben Folds didn't deserve a prestigious Other Stage slot. He has a great solo back catalogue. Has Pashkova ever heard Rockin' The Suburbs? Folds has a great personality, and it's a pity the BBC couldn't find 15 minutes to show the viewers his showmanship. R Frost

Crowded House had the best singalongs and crowd interaction. A true class live act, never disappointing. Symo

As an armchair viewer, I thought The Verve were awesome, the band of the weekend from the BBC's limited coverage. Richard Ashcroft put in a commanding performance.

His voice was at its best, with a mesmerising menace, and new single Love Is Noise is excellent. It's got to provide them with their third No 1. I bet Ashcroft is glad that he's given up on his unimaginative solo career to patch things up. DJ Dave

What was Pashkova on about to say Shakin' Stevens should have been told not to play any new songs? Would she prefer Glastonbury organisers give all bands a pre-approved setlist?

And for her to say Jay-Z performed the best freestyle rapping? He was an embarrassment. Pashkova should have checked out Rankin' Roger's son, Rankin' Jr. And how dare she describe some fans as freaks? Glasto is where you don't get judged. Richard Evans

Pashkova's review was spot on. Glasvegas played a technically excellent set, but struggled with an impossible crowd. Santogold won people over well, both Editors and Fratellis failed to reach their heights of '07 and, following a dull first half-hour, Kings of Leon came alive to win over a sceptical crowd. Music is an incidental bonus at Glastonbury. It's a weekend away to a reality that you dreamed of. Those who criticised the line-up miss the point. But Jay-Z's Wonderwall? Big deal. it was hardly Otis Redding doing Satisfaction. Croydon Barry

I saw Amy Winehouse doing a solo in-store gig at HMV in 2003. She was mesmerising. Her subsequent album may have been better, but was it worth the price? Pierre Robert

The BBC's Glastonbury coverage has left me conflicted, as I've found myself warming to the previously irredeemable Rufus Hound thanks to his interview with Guy Harvey. On the other hand, there's something sinister about Nick Grimshaw I can't put my finger on. Jamie Green

What a difference a day makes. The clean-cut, healthy Amy Winehouse with the beautiful voice at Hyde Park vs the Sister Hyde at Glasto. Scary. Mondo Ray
