I can't believe neither of REM's singles from Accelerate even made the Top 40, especially when they've starting making an effort on their B-sides again. The charts are rubbish. Both songs are brilliant. Neecy

Despite the praise from Voiders, Roisin Murphy's Overpowered album is bland and derivative, with just two half-decent songs. A far superior electro/pop album is Random Order by Juliet. Avalon was hands-down Single of 2006. Dr Barratt

Bobby Gillespie needs to get over himself, after his interview with Lauren Laverne. How arrogant, rude and inarticulate he is. Ella Glasgow

I've just got into Sparks. Their new album is mindblowing. The Futureheads' new album was sublime. Kerrie Zoe

For those asking why the same Void stayed up three days, the weekend pages got lost in the system. We're trying to retrieve the letters. Sorry!

Work Experience

I have spent two weeks working on a farm/ animal shelter. I came home stinking of cats/ horses/ pigs/ dogs. I had to walk 10 dogs in wellies, rain or shine, every day for two weeks.

What fun. And I was offered a summer job. And you know what? I just might take it.

Politics

I'm disturbed that no one in my general knew who Iain or Duncan Smith were, surely the most famous twins in politics, if the information the comic wiz Paul Merton has supplied me with is correct.

No one could name the leader of the Liberal Democrats, but even Trevor McDonald would have difficulty knowing that.
The Lonely Brain Cell

Wouldn't recognise them at a bus stop, personally.

Ta da!

I have returned! Why did I go? All that d*mn talk about Big Brother and suchlike. WLW, how you been keeping? Got any Jaffa Cakes sent to you yet? No? Too many question marks? Right. That's about it then. Random as ever.
Love from your long lost mother.

I noticed Earls's first gig was here in Milton Keynes at Pilz. I was there on Saturday for Capdown's hometown farewell show. They were wicked, and will be missed. Vaga

Neecy is right. Thecharts are rubbish, ao let it go. Not every song in the charts is weak, however. REM are my favourite band, but the main format for Supernatural Superserious had yet another rubbish instrumental to offer. Just enjoy what you enjoy. Gazzoir

It's good of Radiohead to suddenly start worrying about the plight of independent record shops. A bit late, though, considering most of them have already closed. Of course, if certain bands hadn't started giving away their albums free online, people might have had a reason to go into these shops to buy something. DJ Gordy

That's Not My Name? That's right, for The Ting Tings. Their name is really Shampoo. Zeppody

I was underwhelmed by Foo Fighters at Wembley. It was a great spectacle, but most of it was lost in a wall of sound on the louder songs, though the acoustic stuff was great. I'd give Supergrass's support set top marks, ace as usual. Also, I'm blown away by REM's new album, their best in years. Pat Palloon

I used to like The Ting Tings, but it's the "too much cake" syndrome. Mystery Jets are joining them. Ella Glasgow

Foo Fighters were good on Friday at Wembley, but the acoustics let them down. I stood on the pitch for the first 90 minutes and sat 25ft from the stage for the remaining hour, and they were much better at London 02 last year. Tony Tudor

I'm bemused how Oasis are getting the Silver Clef lifetime achievement award over Van Der Graaf Generator. 4o years in, still pushing boundaries and essential in concert. Alan Watson

Adam Syntax is right that chart compilers OCC have killed off the single. They made them uncollectable, as gifts like free stickers and more than two B-sides are apparently an "unfair advantage". By doing that, they made music more disposable, in a "May as well download it" manner. Bring back the 10", it's a start. Sonic Ross

Kaiser Chiefs duetting with Lily Allen should give them a clue to their real level of credibility. Michael Harper

Filter never get mentioned here. So, after their gig at Islington Academy on Monday, I thought it was time they did. They were awesome. Praise to their support band Mexicolas. I'm not a fan of current indie, but there's something fresh about them. My first gig was being dragged along to Neil Diamond by my mum when I was seven. Caro Anderson

I can't believe Mint Royale are No 1. It was rubbish first time round. Middy

Good on Kerrie for getting into the world of Russell and Ron Mael. My first gig was Sparks at Croydon Fairfield in 1974, and my next gig is Sparks at Shepherds Bush Empire on Thursday for the Exotic Creatures premiere. What a band, still fresh after 21 albums. Mick Vanner

I read Earls's 10/10 gig review of Bon Iver before going to bed on Thursday, and couldn't sleep a wink; I wasn't even there! Ollie Holtam

Adam is right to say chart compilers OCC killed off the single. Three songs only, cheap singles just for the first week of sale, hype/ airplay overkill for weeks before release all helped kill it. The single used to be a joy: four-track EPs, gatefold sleeves, extra songs, gifts (remember the ones The Primitives gave away?).

Oh, and for mentioning My Bl*ody Valentine as a good EP, I could marry Adam. Honey Power

Ladytron's new album, Velocifero, is a disappointment. The production is flat, and the mix sounds like a salvage job. I can't believe all the band are happy with it. They've spent too much time in the US, and it shows. They're still a class act, but Velocifero means they'll remain at cult status. Hogs

I'm ripping my CD collection on my PC, and the odd classic is distracting me. I spent last night in Beth Orton's Trailer Park. Bliss. Tony Vegas
