well, we knew it was bound to happen sooner or later. but as of 13th of july, zine will be no more. may we use this thread to remember the good days when it wasnt a b*ckch*t clone and when the letters were actually good (excluding any long time ziners who still get printed)

Well, it's quite a shame, really, I had a few letters that I still wanted to get printed. I'll just make my own version of Mega-Zine and send them to myself until I run out of ideas. That, or nothing. Nothing.

I'm not happy about this in a way, but then again, would you let a dying dog suffer this much? I think it's the kind thing to do, cos MegaZine has been dying on it's a*se.

Ah, this does make me sad. Mega-zine is THE last page still going from my heyday of Ceefax/Teletext reading, which about five years ago included Digitiser, Quotes of the Day (Ceefax p. 146), all the comments pages on Ceefax (Vibe, Chatterbox, yes - even Backchat), the TV previews and reviews section on BBC (used to be pages 590-5), and then Angst, Frame It and Turner the Worm on C4 for a laugh.

The digital TV revolution has a lot to answer for. Whatever anyone says, Digital Teletext is rubbish, and shouldn't carry the name. It's merely another system of boring menus to navigate.

Anyway, is anyone planning to send in a final letter? I wouldn't mind sending one in for the occasion, even if the current WLW won't have a clue who I am.

It's not much of a shock, personally.

It's been crap for a ghood while now, with only a small handful of good letters infrequently. David-James and myself have wirtten a letter in, but it's unrelated to the demise of 'Zine. Perhaps there should be a collaborative one, by anyone here that wants to?

yeah, as far as i know, im the only ziner in my school and it made me feel special to have people ask who the hell davord was (i have a badge with a pic of davord with the words "hail davord" written across). and like insane jam sow said, its one of the last original pages on teletext i read. it was through turner the worm and glug that i discovered zine, back when i was a primary school kid age 10!

I've sent in one letter. It's not very good due to my lengthly period with no practice, but never the less I've shown willing.

Unfortunately I had to ask people where I could find 'Zine

I wonder if WLW will come on VR at the end of it all. Mind you, I don't suppose he'd be overly welcome anymore.

Already sent, amigo, but it's not really a funny letter or anything, just a goodbye type letter. I felt as if I should send something in as 'Zine was, at one point of my life, quite important, as sad as that sounds.
I hope some day, for some reason, David Duchovny is investigated by the FBI. Because that would make a great story.

VR will survive. It's just a matter of adapting although yeah, without Zine I doubt this site or the friendships that have been created would exist. Back when I was at school Zine really was a great help to me as it gave me something to smile about. I will miss that. I will miss all the laughs there have been over the years. The way it is now is only really a shadow of how good it used to be.

It's a real shame that zine is finishing. Though I can't say that it's not about time lately. It's gone downhill drastically, and I think the end is evidence of its demise.

I wouldn't say it changes much about this site. I'm sure there's still ziners that haven't found VR yet (god help them). And I think that some may return, that is, if they still read zine.

As suggestions, we could resend some of the better letters from over the years. Like a best of zine?

Or just give nods to those who've tried to keep it going lately?

I think a final VR goodbye is a fantastic idea. But it needs to be old-school ziney, definitely.

Well, it's certainly going to cut down on new members. If you read most people's takes on the history of VR (see here), you can see that most people found this place because of 'Zine.

Now generations of kids will have to make do with actually studying for their GCSEs instead of reading 'Zine and the other deceased letters pages on Teletext like I did as a lass. IJS is absolutely spot on; it seems like both Ceefax and Teletext are seriously condensing the number of pages that viewers can contribute to. I don't understand exactly why that is as 'Zine's certainly had enough material to keep running; some of the junk that gets printed compared to the stuff that's written is a travesty. Maybe the push to get people to text in was too expensive and unsuccessful?

A VR letter would just be a single letter saying goodbye to Zine etc. I doubt we would have room for everyones names or messages unless we put a footnote asking it to be continued on each page on the last day of Zine. We are the regulars. It would suck if there was newbies printed on the last day.

I will miss Zine. It has sucked for a while but there has still been some good letters from the regs. I also nominate Rob, Smashed Strawberry and Little Blue Fox to mainly write the letter
