You wouldn't go wrong with a bit of Christy Moore

Christy Moore

I do love me some Christy Moore

Here's Sinead O'Connor with the Cheiftains, which I think could be perfect.

You could probably get away with a blues or country song under folk as well.

I second Christy Moore.

Billy Bragg

The Men They Couldn't Hang

Fairport Convention

I don't really like Steeleye Span, but I think it fits what you're after.

I can't think of much more decent "British" folk music that I like, but if you're after Irish stuff...

Luke Kelly or Ronnie Drew fronted Dubliners

The Clancy Brothers

Christy Moore's old group Planxty is worth checking out, too.

Let me know if you consider pursuing an Irish direction, I've got lots of other ideas.
Or even American folk music, actually, there's lots of fantastic appalachian/bluegrass stuff.

Some unasked for American folk music, for no reason other than I'm enjoying the searching.

Well you are just an ORDINARY MAN! Hahaha, did you see what I did there?

Plus, he's Irish. And I am also a NATIVE!

Yes you'll all complain it's not proper folk, it's modern etc etc, but Mumford & Sons' Little Lion Man is a tremendous song with a folky vibe.

How soon do you need it?

Fran/Fran's boyfriend are folk aficionados (he's a folk musician soon to have his own CD in HMV, and spends a lot of time playing folk festivals), so if you don't need it too soon, I'm sure she can recommend all manners of stuff depending on what you need.

Aurals Velupide!

John Renbourn, Martin Simpson, Bert Jansch, Kate Rusby, Dock Boggs, off the top of my head.

Like someone else said, might be worth investigating Appalachian/Blues stuff as well.
What can I say? I did it all for the Wookies.
