Signatures

Hello, I'm just curious as to how one goes about putting a photo signature in their posts....after uploading a picture to the avatars/signatures gallery, I tried coping the url by going into the properties thing and pasting it into my profile, like I would with an avatar, but that didn't seem to work, and I also tried copying the shortcut and doing the same....am I doing it all wrong, or could it be anything to do with the format...I was using a JPEG format.
