Point of The Matter

The angel you know and loved is no more, she has gone into retirement.

Of course, I'm talking about the angel that sits on top of the Christmas tree! In a way, I'm glad Mother decided to throw her out. But wait, what's this, Mother? You're getting a star for the tree this year? But where will I sit? I thought I was in line for the tree! Why must thou forsake me?

One Winged Angel

Look on the bright side- no more splinters.

It's excellent news that pj harvey and John Parish have a new album out in May. My hopes for the year are fairly predictable- new albums from Teenage Fanclub, Sparklehorse and Lemonheads. Also, he's done some sterling collaborative work recently, but a new solo album by Mark Lanegan would be sweetly McSweet. The Doc

I hope Morrissey's new album is a rebirth after the inert Ringleader. I'm hoping for Mozean freshness. Rob Hunt

lord sebastian flyte Des is so dull, they should have a "Des leaving Countdown" with the clock and the dididididididdybumm! noise.

Is it you who's been doing all those newspaper polls requesting Stephen Fry?

Why was Ian Brown in Chumps of The Week for his Brits nominations? His last album The Word Is Yours was fantastic, and its single Illegal Attacks was great, even though it was too controversial to get radio play. It just needed a few brave people to give it a chance. Brown's nomination is deserved, when you see what he's up against. Kev Bird

Longest serving Ziner

I would like to stake the claim at being the longest serving Ziner at well over a decade. All the way back to the days of Generator (anyone else remember that?). I've survived seven or eight pages changes and I'm still going strong. Anyone care to challenge me?

Strange world

I've been told that modern jets can fly themselves and that instead of three in the cockpit, they require only a pilot and a trained monkey with a gun. The pilot is to assure the passengers and the monkey is to shoot him if he goes near the controls. Maybe so, but all my applications to become a pilot have been rejected, derided and mocked.

Grey Owl's Vagabond Cousin

I've trained Marcel to do the same, should Mabel or Cedric ever attempt to go near the Zine controls.

Barking up the wrong tree

So there I was, pursuing Teletext pages!... when a thought struck me. Although I use the name Frumpy Squirrel, I'm not an actual squirrel and know that I never will be (much to my dismay). How many other Ziners aren't what their names say they are? Is darklord an actual lord with the light off? Is The Barking Tree a slightly insane elm?

Frumpy Squirrel

Anyone paying attention knows Barking Tree is oak, not elm. The slightly insane part is, however, accurate.

I recently saw Franz Ferdinand's second album on sale in my local Poundland. I paid £10 for it when it came out. Typical. Speaking of which, The Credit Crunch is my favourite YouTube discovery. It should have got into the chart, but probably didn't as no one was willing to pay for it. Dionne Jones

I enjoyed the Top 10 special day on The Void, especially the list of albums
a Voider discovered in 2008. I agree that the set from Hamburg is astonishing. It seems a more relevant measure of how good an album is than which calendar year it came out in. But it felt a little undressed without one of Sleepy Sealion's perfectly formed masterpieces. Kevin Lee

What's In A Name?

Most Ziner names are, in fact, nonsense. I certainly have nothing to do with mental illness, fruity conserves or, indeed, female pigs. While The Barking Tree, One Winged Angel and others may like to live up to their titles, I think you'll find the rest of us are just a bunch of fruit cakes who like to put silly words next to each other.

I agree with Shane that his birth year, 1984, was great for albums, but he should also check Steeltown by Big Country that year. It's got a guitar sound I've not heard since, and Richard Branson is a fan, judging from how the sleeve is in the new Virgin Atlantic advert. Kevin O'Neill

That socks

A butterfly flew out of my laundry this morning. It got me thinking: maybe all those morning. It got me thinking: maybe all those missing socks across the world have been cunningly disguising themselves as bugs in a bid for freedom. Either that, or I need to change fabric softener.

The Talentless mr ripley

By "butterfly," do you mean "moth"?... which explains the missing socks.

Genius at work

Mwa ha ha! I truly am an evil genius! I have created my very own Stephen Fry key ring! Next project: trapping elvis's soul in this teddy bear. Why? Because then when he sings "Teddy Bear" it'll be literal, really.

Moogle Wannabe VII

Why the Stephen Fry key ring, though?

May I say how much John Martyn will be missed? I saw him play many times and, even when battling drink, he was always mesmerising. DJ Gordy

Who is responsible for choosing Oasis' singles? Falling Down is fantastic, but was released as a download before the album came out, so why not choose Bag It Up instead? I urge everyone to have it- it's sublime. Aaron O'Neill

Niqabs- it's a cover-up

I don't know what all this fuss is regarding niqabs; because, if anything, I can see potential... for uglies. Made compulsory, all ugly people should wear one, both men and women. That would see the rest of us from looking at them. Sure-fire winner, I think, WLW.

Hasn't anyone ever told you, beauty is in the eye of the beholder? That's what I keep telling Mabel, anyway.

I was very sad to hear of John Martyn's death. In his last interview, he said: "I honestly believe no one has had more fun than me, and that living full on is the best way to do it. I would do it again in a f***ing moment!" He was unique and will be missed. Chas&Morph

After seeing Screaming Lights this week, I'd like to pull Earls up on this 5/10 review of their GMN single. They're awesome live. Danny Winner

Curb this nonsense

All this talk of politics has made me want to campaign against something. Kerbs, to be specific. Last year, more people died in kerb-related incidents than I had hot dinners. FACT. Come to think of it, if I lived in the Middle East; which, obviously I don't, I could form a pressure group called "Kurds Against Kerbs". Or, alternatively, "KAK".

Klim Detaropave

You might say this campaign is a load of KAK, so to speak.

The parental advisory debate reminds me of when I heard The Strokes' 12.51 on the radio during the day. I was surprised to hear them play the f-word uncensored, and I don't recall the First Impressions album having a parental advisory sticker.

As for best year for albums, I say 2004. The Open, Keane, Franz, Ordinary Boys, The Streets, Razorlight. Sadly, most of those have split or not lived up to expectations since. Ted Robinson
