Isn't Fall Out Boy's semi-sacreligious cover of an '80s pop classic in Beat It the last desperate gasp of a flavour of the month rock genre? Is that the glorious sound of a death knell I hear? Well, one can dream. VoiVoiVoi

I'd like to join in the praise for Bon Iver's Emma Forever Ago, and for Spiritualized's Songs In A & E. They're right up there with Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!! as albums of 2008 so far. Lem Fatale

A Poem I Wrote...

Mama said I'd lose my head if it wasn't fastened on. One day I did lose my head and it rolled away.

I can't think about it,
'Cause my brain is in it,
I can't see where it is,
'Cause my eyes are in it,
I can't call out to it,
'Cause my mouth is on it,
I can't listen out for it,
'Cause my ears are on it,
So I'll just sit here for a minute.

My first gig was Hawkwind at Liverpool Stadium in 1972. I miss the old Stadium. It was a dump, but it had a tatty charm that modern sanitised arenas don't have. It also staged some of the best gigs that I ever went to. Pongothechimp

Can anyone tell me what has happened to Ridley Scott's four-hour version of 1492? He promised us it about two years ago on DVD. David Bell, Colwyn Bay

The DVD is stuck in a row over rights. Paramount has the theatrical rights and that is why the DVD was announced in 2004, takes off Paramount's release schedule and never released. Guild Film Distribution have the rights in the UK but no news yet on release.

Naming Plants

In February I stuck a label on a pot plant in the graphics studio at college declaring: "My name is Nigel."

It's still there. While washing my paintbrushes today I noticed a label on the plant pot on the windowsill in front of me saying: "Hey, I'm Harry. How are you doing?"

I congratulate the BBC on a fine job on the new Doctor Who. As a long term fan who has forgotten the magic of this show, this has opened my eyes once more.

Sleeping

This is one of life's mysteries. People ramble about how the pyramids were built and how S-Club (insert number here) ever got into the charts, when the real question is that of sleep. The more I sleep, the more tired I become. The less sleep the more awake I am. But then I got tired after a few days.

When will those boffin-type people in labs actually tell us how to sleep? Maybe they're all just too tired.

I enjoyed Indy 4 with its many '50s film references, especially the homage to The Treasure of The Sierra Madre. The subtle interaction between Ford and Blanchett to establish her as an equal was nice. The lack of fashionable quick cut action was refreshing. The lazy criticism that is being levelled at it at present is the same criticism that was levelled at the other three. It was wrong then. It's wrong now. Craig de Mello, Suffolk

Slug And Snail: Episode 2

SLUG: So what do they call you then?
SNAIL: What "they call" me is Sammy the Snail.
SLUG: Really? What a coincidence. My name is Sammy the Slug.
SNAIL: Well, that goes to prove how little imagination the Maker actually has.

The decline of CD singles has been on the cards for years, with gimmicks to ensure they become instant hits taking their toll. At least with downloads, the pricing is simple and you get what you pay for. Dionne Jones

My first gig was AC/DC at leeds Gueen's Hall on 1/ 10 /1982 when I was 14. It was £4 and brilliant. I still see bands now. I saw Sons And Daughters on Friday, and they were great too. Martyn Percival

Good Things Come

After several months of looking, hoping and wanting I nearly found the perfect man. But no, it wasn't the perfect man but I did manage to find Jilly Cooper's The Man Who Made Husbands Jealous.

This is my first Cooper read, and one I am eager to get into as I saw the TV adaptation a few years ago and Stephen Billington was hot. Then he was in Coronation St, was mean to Sally and never seen again. Wonder where he is now?

I'm with Earls rather than Lawrie on the Ladytron album. It's boring and samey throughout. It was my first intro to the band, and I found it a letdown. Steve Reynolds

I don't know why the Voider whose first album was 90125 by Yes should be so embarrassed about it. It was mine too, when I was seven, and I eventually became such a fan that I bought their entire back catalogue on vinyl and then again on CD a few years later. Matt RSJ

The Reverend's complaints about the security at Ministry's farewell gig at Manchester Ecademy amused me. It's worth remembering Ministry played in the same town as Damageplan the night Dimebag Darrell was shot dead on stage.

I doubt the people at that gig would have any qualms about metal detectors. I wasn't too inconvenienced at the same gig. Revd should save his money in future and I'll gladly take your place at safer gigs. Andy Whittaker

When I'm Happy

Some days I can be really happy, for reasons I will keep to myself. On these days I smile a lot, extend my arms and shout "Wheeeee" and consume a lot of sugar.

Until recently I thought there was nothing wrong with this- until I spilt some on the floor. Mother was most displeased, not even Vanish would shift it. The moral: be happy in the kitchen, where the floors are wiped clean.

Forgotten Names

Wow, it's been so long since my last post. What, at least a year now?

I look at Zine these days and see all these new posters. Where has everyone gone? Try as I might, I can't even remember that gay giraffe's name...

My first gig was Northside at Blackburn King George in 1990. That loved-up acid house are, being 18 and at college free from the restraints of school. Fond memories. Queen B

Ricky Wilson reckons his cabaret act Kaiser Chiefs are the natural successor to Oasis, who he claims are "up their a****"? What a joke. Wilson was born up his own behind. Oasis are a genuine band, not a bunch of faker jokers like the Chiefs. Manickev

I can't see why Woolworths is being blamed for its decision to stop selling CD singles. If peope were still buying them, Woolies would continue to sell them. Unfortunately, people are voting with their feet and computers, and deciding they prefer downloads. You can't expect a shop to stock things people don't want to buy. DJ Gordy

My first gig was The Beatles at leeds Odeon in 1963 when I was seven. I can't recall but I was there. Steve Oldhippy

As a girl from the east Indies, originally, who's an indie fan, I can tell you that there isn't much commercial native rock (except from MTV Asia).

Even a band who sell out 10, 000 capacities have office jobs. Anyway, I guess I could fill the rock-free time with listening to AR Rahman soundtracks and folk fiddle-tunes.

Tree Sap

You could. Or you could get out there and make some music myself.
