Townie Tim- Episode # 21

Tim: My computer won't work.
Amie: Try turning it on.
Tim: (rubs the monitor and starts to dance slowly...)
Amie: Ew, Tim! Stop that now.
Tim: But I thought you said...
Amie: (switches computer on).
Tim: Oh... thanks.

Why doesn't Caro count Muse as rock? You only have to listen to the epic guitars on Stockholm Syndrome or Citizen Erased to hear that's not the case. Or is it because they have a varied repertoire and experiment within different genres? Carolyn Doyle

Further to Nova saying his first single was by Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich, I saw them a few weeks ago and met them in the bar after. Great guys, who know how to treat their fans. Macca

That weekend feeling

I'm really excited and though I don't want to go into a backlash of songs from a decade ago, I do feel that we're all in need of a time machine of sorts.

Just imagine the fantastic things we could all do, like catch the bubonic plague (ok, so maybe that one's so fantastic). But there's tons of stuff we can still do and see. Oh how I wish I had one.

I sort-of-agree with the Voider who said Britain doesn't currently produce a substantial rock act. But our bands are ignored in favour of indie, dance and pop. We've had bands who would have been huge if they were American: Orange Goblin, The Wildhearts, Paradise Lost and The Almighty. But they were all in the '90s. Scary Guy

Little Britain (again)

Ahem, Owl of Bewilderment, not all critics think Little Britain is genius. I, for one, have been saying that it's bad for ages. Sure, the first series was funny and the first episode of the second series was good (the first time you saw it).

Now the only thing that is still consistently funny about Little Britain is the Tom Baker voiceovers.

Whoever would have predicted that 7" vinyl would outlast the CD single? With lots of indie releases being 7"-only, that's what is happening. My first one was Plastic Bertrand's Ca Plane Pour Moi. I still love that song. Adam Syntax

Bank of Friendship

I knew I recognised your name from somewhere. I went to watch Arsenal play last week, and as I was walking to the ground I passed a big pub called "The bank of friendship". It's a strange name so I'm guessing you're an Arsenal fan? Or you live near there.

I would have gone in to look for you, but I'm not old enough. And I don't know what you look like. Which would help.

On the CD of Death Cab For Cutie's new album Narrow Stairs, the switch from Pity And Fear to Ice Is Getting Thinner sounds like a vinyl scratch. Is it a fault, or intentional? It doesn't seem like their usual style, but the rest of my CD plays perfectly! Gazzoir

I think the Jarvis Cocker incident isn't as straightforward as Little Man Tate would have us think. Considering Pulp's final album was produced by Scott Walker, an artist criticised in its lyrics, I doubt Cocker has a problem facing people whom he's slated. Still, it got Little Man Tate headlines, didn't it? They need those. Matthew Bartley

What's Cooking?

So who fancies coming over to my palatial abode and cooking me dinner?

A stark warning, though: I get no vegetables. I am primarily a meat eater and also favour the odd octopus.

A concoction of tasty crocodile with some curry sauce would be most beneficient to you. And you're welcome to employ my little microwave if it helps.

Any takers?

Like Andy, I love the Bon Iver album. It's tied in with how he made the record, living wild in a log cabin. But I hope the story of how it was made doesn't overshadow the music itself. A friend who knew nothing of Iver's past loves the record too. It's one of those albums that, as soon as you have it, you realise your collection was missing something vital beforehand. Helen Watts

Can you tell me what has happened to Sin City 2? Paul Lewis, Wirral, Merseyside

Frank Miller claims that the script is done, but there has been some problems he "don't even want to understand". Miller estimated it's going to take at least a year before they start working on Sin City 2, and that the problems are financial. Currently Miller is working on Will Eismer's The Spirit, which is to be released January 2009.

Mmm, Tasty!

It was while looking for some soy sauce to put on my noodles, that I found 13 bottles of various out-of-date sauces.

My favourite kinds included the "Zesty Caribbean Sauce" (best before 2000); the Thai Fish Sauce from 1998, and also, there was some Garlic and Chilli Oil way back from February 1994. It's over 11 years old! We moved house with this sauce and nobody noticed! Anyway. So that's our cupboard.

Indy's weaknesses are what were the atrengths in Raiders and Crusade, a quest for something meaningful and likeable characters. Shia LeBeouf and Ray Winstone are a lousy answer to John Rhys Davies and Denholm Elliott. Hopefully a sequel with Mutt as the lead will happen but after Jar Jar Binks who knows. Anon, via text

I'm no Luddite. I just find downloads unappealing, with none of the romance of buying a great single. For me, Zavvi is a DVD/ game shop with little relevance to music. Adam Syntax

A lot of West Indian households in the '80s like mine had country & western playing on a Sunday morning. It may sound idiosyncratic, but C & W reminds me of my childhood. I'm still enamoured with Tennessee Ernie Ford and Jimmy Dean. Their raconteur style reminds me of rap. Is there anyone else in that vein I should check out? Rich A

The Ting Tings are a great band. Let's have no pathetic indie snobbery backlash. Croydon Ian

The Friendly Prophet of Doom "Well, I'm back", said Samwise. "I'm back too!" said the Prophet.

Back schmoo, I say.

Emma-The-Li'l'-Angel Weezer's new song rocks, even if the video was filmed at the Playboy mansion. Men! Honestly. Tut tut.

Are they in their bikinis again?

So Many Fish Yay! I've finally finished. It took me a while to type out this e-mail. Now, I'm off to Carlisle. Good-morrow!

Night-day!

Insurance Claim

... so I said "I'll huff and puff and blow your house down!"

Anyway, after a brief traumatic episode, the little swine presented me with an insurance bill for £50, 000!

Roll on the new Metallica album. I know we'll never get another Master of Puppets, but I hope it's better than St Anger. Tosh

After Voiders' first singles/ albums, what was everyone's first gig? Mine was The Prodigy on their Fat of The Land tour when I was 16 in 1998. It was bedlam. I've never experienced anything as loud since, possibly because it damaged my hearing. Toby Morgan

Zine Swearword

Please, WLW! Don't make a Zine swearword! Part of being a Ziner is trying your hardest to be funny without swearing. Give us a swearword and woo! We'd go nuts! I mean, Zine would go all blue. With people lighting up cigarettes in the corner and listening to grungy old jukeboxes (hint, lilac leopard and farmer jack).

I propse we keep Zine clean.

Interesting Chair

Hmph. Sometimes a giraffe has gotta lot off steam. What do you suggest...

I rarely go to big venues, but had to see Ministry on their farewell tour. I was stunned at Manchester Apollo's security metal detector, body and bag searches. I can understand flare-ups in nightclubs where you have a cross-section of people. But surely all fans watching a band are all united brothers-in-arms?

If this is the norm, these types of venues won't be seeing my cash again. The Reverend

Pain

My wrist doesn't half hurt! That's what you get from holidays. When you come back, you've become lazy, so any kind of exercise will cramp your muscles up, causing anguish.

Perhaps a bit melodramatic? Yes, I've only just been writing. But the agony. Actually, it worries me that in a few weeks I'll be sitting exams, and my hand seizes up after three A4 pages. I should get some practise really.

elden ray

I propose lots and lots of exercise. Starting with tonight's telly.

A Void picnic? Ooh, yes please. I'd bring obscure vinyl and Pimm's. Just don't get mustard on my butties, I get hives. Tony Vegas

My first gig was a reggae festival at the old Wembley Empie Pool in 1969. I went with my then-girlfriend, and I saw Johnny Nash, Desmond Dekker and Max Romeo. But the main thing I remember is missing our last train back to Redhill and spending the night in Victoria station. R Gibbard

Don't believe Earls's 5/10 review of Ladytron's new album. Volocifero doesn't have a Destroy Everything You Touch on it, but if it's a good album that's far from self-parody. It takes the next step that Witching Hour took from Light And Magic and sounds great for it.

On the subject of self-parody, I'm waiting for Earls to give Guy Garvey's next batch a 9/10 after his One Day Like this review. Lawrie Ward

MSN Names

University folk have boring names. It's all "Jim", "claire" etc.

Why use your first name? Then you have the Girl Guides, who insist on writing like daleks in some bizarre form of text talk. Then the Zine/ VR lot save the day: current gems include: "Why do smoothies have bits of fruit in them, that isn't smooth" and "Loving someone is not having to say you're sorry for covering them in third degree burns". It's like page 1 with each log in.

Numberthree

We are mad and wacky, aren't we? Upside down group hug, giraffelets?
