i've never noticed it so i don't know.

Wait a minute, there is summat a bit like that. If i'm not keen on someone famous and they're Welsh, the fiancé moans at me for not appreciating Welsh people. But it's not like i hate Welsh people as there are plenty of famous English people who annoy me. Well, that's the closest similar thing i can think of, anyroad.

Why would it annoy you that some people pretend to like stuff to fit in? It's them who lose hours of their lives cringing through "The Mighty Boosh". Not you.

You're right, I just read your first post again and I was being a d*ck and TOTALLY misunderstood you.

You're saying that it's annoying that people might not give shows a chance just because the subject is something which doesn't interest them, and that they instead should give it a chance because it is not JUST the subject which makes a show good, it is also the writing etc.

However, I think that the subject does factor in, well for me anyway. A subject which is something I can relate to does aid my enjoyment/understanding of jokes sometimes.

I sort of get what you mean, George, but I can't say I come across that sort of thing too often.
The Father Ted example is one where I could see why it'd annoy you as even though they're not trying to totally hammer Catolicism in the programme they are clearly poking fun at elements of the faith and rituals and a very fanatical Catholic (without a sense of humour) would almost definitely take a certain amount of offence at certain gags, so your point of them liking it because of the subject matter rather than the actual material within is maybe the best example you could give.

I hope some day, for some reason, David Duchovny is investigated by the FBI. Because that would make a great story.

Don't forget the fact that liking something because it's a subject matter close to your heart could be because of all the in-jokes, that are funny only because you "get" them.

The IT crowd is genuinely funny, but it's funnier to me as someone who's worked in that situation because of the in-jokes. Same with The Office, not quite as funny unless you've been in an environment like that and can relate the characters and events to real-life things.

I'm not sure that's strictly true, though I guess it could be in the case of IT jokes in the IT crowd, I just don't imagine that there are too many jokes in that programme which are so specific to the IT field that I don't register them as jokes. I think with stuff like the office and the IT crowd you can't really say its not quite as funny for people who aren't in that situation, as jokes are still jokes.

That said, you could actually be right, I remember chuckling to a joke in the Simpsons about how lawbooks were 'filled with useful legal tidbits like that'. I'm aware it wasn't actually a funny joke, and I reckon somebody without any understanding of law could explain what the humour behind the line was, but they woudn't find it funny the same way I did because... why should they give a sh*t?

I don't think the IT Crowd is genuinely funny though, I think it's average at best and really very poor at worst. Granted I haven't ever worked in an office but I have studied IT exclusively since the age of 16.

IT is not the way to understand the IT Crowd. It may as well be set on a small island off the coast of West Ireland, or in a fire station or something. It's silly, childish humour with safe relationships, a simple double act and a traditional form that the whole family can enjoy. There's nothing wrong with that.

Sorry, G, my sarcasm detector's on the blink so I'm not sure if you think I've misread your thesis or not.

I know the IT Crowd isn't the world's most laugh a minute or revolutionary comedy, but when it's on I just forget about anything else and slip into a safe world where nothing ever really changes and the people are bound to be okay in the end.

I know what you're saying G-Whizz. The IT Crowd for example. It's set in the IT industry, so people who work in the IT industry think it's funny because they get the jokes. But the IT jokes featured in the programme are so simple that nearly anyone, or at least nearly everyone in that demographic, can understand them, and the majority of jokes in the show have little to do with IT. Like I used to think that only Irish people thought Father Ted was funny because it's set in Ireland. But the comedy in the show wasn't aimed at Irish people, it appealed to everyone. Silly people ending up in silly situations because of their own or theirfriends silly nature.
