What do you think of Alter Bridge? They're a pretty current band that records fairly straight hard rock.

To be honest mate, you haven't been the first person to reccommend them to me.

I think they're good at what they do and I can see where they're coming from in their approach to records, but I think they try to cover too broad a spectrum of sounds without really excelling in any. Like, some of the vocal melodys can go a bit too country and western for my taste but then some of their other work is tuned down power chord riffage and then something that knocks on the door of being AOR. I feel like I should like them a lot more than what I actually do, and I'm trying to figure out what it is that I find offputting about them.

Blackbird's a good tune though.

Being a fan of Mike Patton I enjoy music that tries to do too much at once, in that respect Alter Bridge seem almost restrained to me

Oh don't get me wrong, I do like textured and multi layered stuff. That's not why I don't really take to Alter Bridge, it's more that I feel like they dip their toes into too many genres without ever overly impressing or making it their own in terms of a "sound". They just seem a bit...directionless?

Yeah, Mike Patton, he's an odd 'un. The last thing I heard about him was a rumour that he was going to be the new frontman for Velvet Revolver - how would you feel about that?!

Really? That's very interesting...not sure quite how I feel about it. I guess the Faith No More reunion might have reignited any passion he had for being in a band and touring as one of the guys rather than 'the guy' and being involved in a more collaborative group thing. But if that was the case why didn't FNM just stay together? VR's current sound is a bit too...straight for Patton, even FNM were bonkers when they were at their most mainstream. Though the first two Tomahawk albums are fairly restrained...man I don't know. I love VR and I 'LOVE' Patton but would they work together? Would they bring out the best in Patton? I guess I'd love to see.

Have you listened to any of AB's newest album? It's supposed to be their best.

Yeah I've heard that rumour and he's definitely a more obvious fit for them than Patton.
But wasn't it Matt Sorum saying they were almost ready to announce a new singer and then the rest of the band came out and said he jumped the gun?
To be fair I imagine it's very possible they've spoken to Patton and Taylor. Patton has a completely free schedule at the moment, just finished the FNM reunion tour and no current plans with any of his other bands as far as I can tell. Corey Taylor's schedule is a lot more hectic at the moment but if he did join I imagine it would be more permanent than Patton, he gets bored quickly and easily.
I think they both have great voices and am a fan of both their current outputs so would happily see either of them as the frontman of VR.

I just discovered this new rock tinted rapper called Hyro Da Hero, he samples rock and metal riffs and I freaking love him, like a Rage Against The Machine that is hip-hop/rock rather than rock/hip-hop if that makes sense.
He raps over weezer in this song:

If you like him you can download 3 albums for free off his website.
