(I'm sure that there are any number of threads on VR about this if I could be bothered to find them. But I can't. So there.)

The Smiths totally rule! I want to say a big thank you to people like Nadia, Lil and Seaneen who are always going on about how great The Smiths are - because of you guys I went out and bought the best of album a few months ago, and since then I've listened to it about a zillion times. I'm in love! I've now bought most of the albums and listen to them incessently, and I'm just beginning to amass all the Morrissey solo stuff too.

I just can't express in words how great they are, with Johnny Marr's beautiful pop melodies and Morrissey's fantabulous lyrics... Pure perfection!

Incidentally, You Are The Quarry is a brilliant album full of cracking tunes... You should all go out and buy it immediately.

I want to have Morrissey's babies.

I like all 7. but the headmaster ritual just stands out to me as the best track one side one song.

These songs are good for cheering you up

You're weird.

My fave Smiths songs:

1. There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Sheer brilliance.

2. Bigmouth Strikes Again
Fabulous lyrics
"Sweetness, I was only joking when I said
By rights you should be bludgeoned in your bed"

3. Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
When I first got the album I listened to this on repeat for about a week

4. How Soon Is Now
The greatest expression of loneliness and unhappiness ever

5. Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me
The best title in the world, and the song is just as good. I felt like that a lot when I was younger and it really touches me.

But there's so many others! Like 'Frankly Mr Shankly since you ask, you are a flatulent pain in the a*s...' - marvellous!

That song scares me.

It's weird though - I've bought sooo many albums recently (I spend half my wages on CDs ) but I haven't listened to any of them (like Lostprophets, Jet, Rasmus, Incubus etc) coz I've just been listening to The Queen is Dead and You Are the Quarry again and again. I'm addicted!

And while I'm on the subject (I could talk about this for hours... can you tell?) here are my fave Morrissey tracks:

1. Irish Blood English Heart
Love it!

2. The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get
The lyrics are rather sinister...

3. Last of the Famous International Playboys

4. The World is Full of Crashing Bores

5. Every Day is Like Sunday

He is a god. Oh yes.
Now that we're here we may as well go too far.

Incidentally, I've seen There Is A Light That Never Goes Out live. So worship me.

My fave Morrissey song has to be Suedehead, although the new one comes quite close. Best Smiths one is too difficult to say, but today it's probably This Charming Man.

That site's....horrible. Really, ow.
Just goes to show how good The Smiths were and how crap a lot of bands now are.

There is a good thing that was on VH2 the other day 'the Smiths to Morrissey.'

It's well worth a watch, if it's on again.

I'm still debating whether to buy the new album though.

Youngness has nothing to do with it.

I was 3 when the Smiths split up, but great music is timeless.

Don't get me wrong, I like the song. It just scares me. And it would be a lot better if it was edited down, because there's 90 seconds of nothingness before it really begins.

And yes, The Smiths stuff is similar to Morrissey's solo stuff. Not the same, but similar.

And to whoever said they were considering buying the album... DO IT! DO IT NOW!!

I don't think it's terribly similar, apart from the fact the vocals sound the same (for obvious reasons!)

How Soon Is Now got me through school. The pain in those lyrics combined with the most gorgeous sound ever (Marr's soaring guitar intro). It is a song to be listened to in the dark when you are crying your eyes out because you can't face spending another day as Nothing Boy.

And then you have the cheerfulness of "This Charmiong Man", a song to play and dance about to when you are getting ready to go out.

Question: On my birthday the DJ at the Attic played "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", why did that get more people on the dancefloor than any other song?

i may have revealed more about myself than i planned to there

suedehead is a 'best of album' not a studio album. also suedehead was the name of his first solo single.

i think meat is murder is a bit melodramatic.

I've just bought 'You are the Quarry.'

At first i wasn't impressed, but after a few listens it's great. Can't remember the name of the first song (America?), but i think that's fab.

Depressing or not, i'm becoming more and more of a fan. I'm not dying my hair grey thought (yet).

America Is Not The World.

It's quite good, the best tracks off it have already been released as singles, it tends to lose its appeal towards the end though.

We may be the quarry, but Morrisey's the pits.

Possibly the most over-rated artist of all time, in both his solo stuff and with the Smiths. One OK album (The Queen Is Dead album), the rest are complete and utter sh*te.

The Smiths were officailly awful.

Morrisey just drones on and on and have you actually read some of that mans lyrics? He's a joke.

Furthermore, none of the smiths were groundbreaking musicians now, were they?

Everyone has got to get Vauxhall And I. It is perhaps Mozzer's best album, certainly his best of last decade. Best songs? Now My Heart Is Full, Hold On To Your Friends, The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get, Speedway.... most of it is very good.
