IF ITS SOFT ITS A BARM! IF ITS HARD ITS A BAP! IT IS NOT IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM A ROLL! ROLLS ARE ROLLED NOT SQUASHED WHICH IS WHY THEY ARE CALLED ROLLS. BAPS ARE CRUSTY HENCE THE TERM CRUSTY BAPS. THEN YOU HAVE OVEN BOTTOM MUFFINS WHICH ARE BARMS THAT ARE FLATTER AND MORE DOUGHY. CRUSTY COBS ARE TO BE USED ONLY FOR SOUP UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR MOUTH RIPPED TO PIECES.

this is all correct.

It's a roll in Scotland - go into any shop and it will be sold as a roll. And I'm pretty sure they're called morning rolls in most supermarkets I go to as well. I'm tempted to take photos to prove this but that would involve effort. However this goes for every bakery I have ever been in which includes Scotland, North Wales and a variety around England, though admittedly not in the Manchester area which is where the dissent seems to be coming from. That website also calls it a roll.

It's a chip butty and a hot dog bun as far as I'm concerned. And Eccles cakes are Eccles cakes. And muffins are something completely different.

Actually it is the correct word for "the yeasty foam that rises to the surface of fermenting malt liquors" or "a commercial leavening agent containing yeast cells; used to raise the dough in making bread and for fermenting beer or whiskey".

Muffins as in bread good muffins, not sweet muffins, are those round flat things, hard to describe really.

You get 4 types of Muffin

1: The American muffin, which is cake and very nice they are too
2: The Muffin, flat quite heavy doughy bread
3: the Oven Bottom muffin, lighter doughy bread than the above, its effectively a less leavened barm.
4: The English muffin, which is just what the yanks call Crumpets.

I call a crumpet a crumpet. I have no idea what you are talking about in number 3.

crumpet is crumpet to me too actually

number 3... as phil isn't here to say..
its like what you'd call a roll (a barm) except with a flatter top and bottom, and bigger in circumfrence. also, it's firmer and doughier.

It's definately a roll.

Although round here it's a cob, which doesn't seem to exist anywhere outside of Leicester. You can't actually go into the chippy and ask for a chip butty, because half of them don't know what you mean.

That is and always will be a roll. Until it's eaten, then it'll be a digested roll.

A muffin is a cake with a round bit on top.

A crumpet is a weird round.... thing, that tastes good with Marmite and cheese.

A barm is a misspelled barn.

I'd say 'roll', even though I'm a backwards speaking Brummie

I sometimes use 'cob' though as I have no dialectal consistency.
I hope some day, for some reason, David Duchovny is investigated by the FBI. Because that would make a great story.
